General Summary of Position:

The Manager of Systems Engineering is the day-to-day leader and technical manager of the Systems Engineering group in Information Technology. The Manager of Systems Engineering is responsible for supervising staff, coordinating the flow of work, and leading the implementation, optimization, and support of enterprise infrastructure services that meet the business needs of UMass Lowell.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of IT Infrastructure, the Manager of Systems Engineering has a broad and deep view of UMass Lowell's information technology platforms as well as knowledge of the business processes and drivers that impact those technical platforms. As a project coordinator of highly complicated systems and manager, the Manager of Systems Engineering is responsible for ensuring the Systems Engineering team is meeting internal and external deadlines and is responsible for translating strategic direction into operational execution.

Under the direction of the Executive Director of IT Infrastructure, the Manager of Systems Engineering is a technically advanced staff member responsible for the adoption and assimilation of new technologies and the integration, modernization, and optimization of existing investments in information technology. They are integral in the overall services delivered to all internal and external users of UMass Lowell's IT infrastructure.

The Manager of Systems Engineering is the highest internal technical escalation point within the Systems Engineering team for issues impacting production systems, and functions as a mentor to other members of IT. In addition to knowledge of server systems, the Manager of Systems Engineering is expected to make meaningful contributions to all areas of UMass Lowell's technology infrastructure, including identity, collaboration, security, research, and cross-functional IT services.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Requires a minimum of 7 or more years of progressively responsible experience in a large Information Technology environment, including design, implementation, operations and support responsibilities.
  • A strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and ensuring the success of our customers.
  • Strong technical knowledge of Windows Server and enterprise infrastructure platforms.
  • The ability to comprehend complex technical issues and rapidly isolate and prioritize likely causes and develop practical remediation.
  • Advanced understanding of identity and access technologies, including Active Directory and Entra ID.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of core network and infrastructure technologies, including DHCP, DNS and related enterprise services.
  • Proven understanding of cloud and hybrid technologies and their benefit to IT.
  • The ability to work in a self-directed manner as well as with a technical team to achieve university business goals.
  • The ability to manage, mentor and direct technical staff.
  • Previous hands-on production experience and deep understanding of VMware vSphere environments and architecture.
  • Hands-on experience with VMware Horizon VDI environments or equivalent remote access technologies.
  • Proficiency with enterprise storage, backup/recovery and systems management technologies.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft 365 collaboration and messaging technology, including Exchange, Teams, SharePoint and OneDrive.
  • Demonstrated mastery of industry best practices relating to secure computing and data security practices.
  • Advanced understanding of core web technologies such as IIS, HTTP/S, SFTP and SSL/TLS.
  • Experience with endpoint, identity, messaging or threat protection tools.
  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical users and stakeholders.
  • Experience coordinating with multi-vendor partners and support organizations.
  • Hands-on working knowledge of monitoring, automation and systems management technologies.
  • In-depth understanding of how disparate and multi-vendor systems can interoperate to deliver reliable services.
  • Experience with database-supported enterprise applications and related infrastructure dependencies.

Additional Considerations:

  • Master's degree strongly preferred.
  • Previous experience with scripting or automation tools such as PowerShell, Python or equivalent platforms is desirable.
  • Industry-recognized certification such as Microsoft, VMware, cloud or security credentials strongly preferred.
  • Higher education, research computing or similarly complex enterprise experience preferred.

This is a full-time, benefited and SEIU Professional union position in grade P21. Anticipated salary based on range minimum: $94,293, 25th quartile of $108,437 and midpoint of $122,581.
