General Summary of Position:

Maintain building temperatures by monitoring, troubleshooting, repairing, or installing electronic devices and related mechanical equipment involved with building heating, cooling and ventilation systems. This also includes repair of devices such as fume hoods, domestic hot water heaters, lighting and other energy management equipment involved with day to day building operations. Making modifications to the software logic and scheduling end devices to assist in saving energy.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • 3-5 years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, technical experience in the installation, construction, design, repair, maintenance or testing of building HVAC systems and electronic, electrical, mechanical systems.
  • 3-5 years practical experience in the Controls Industry
  • A diploma or certificate from a recognized trade, technical or vocational school at high school level or higher, with a major in heating, cooling and ventilation systems and controls or mechanical or electrical practices required.  Will consider candidates with significant directly related experience of 7 to 10 years.
  • Knowledge of ASHRE standards as related to university heating, cooling and ventilation systems and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the principles of the operation for industrial heating, cooling and ventilation systems. This includes the knowledge of the operation of automatic temperature control systems, analog control devices, air compressors, air driers, valves, actuators, relays, fire dampers, air handling units, building air flow  systems, fan sequence, control inputs and outputs, VAV controllers, VMA controllers and networked control systems. Knowledge and ability to identify and resolve problems with the operation of these systems.
  • Knowledge of BMS systems used to control building heating, cooling and ventilations, including communication networks, consoles and input/output devices
  • Knowledge of the principles and repair of pneumatics as applied to HVAC systems
  • Knowledge of the fundamentals of electrical practice
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of precision measuring equipment used in ATC, such as manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, tachometers, etc.
  • Skill in using all of the necessary tools of the trade; both hand and power.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others
  • Ability to lift heavy objects, climb ladders and work in confined spaces.
  • Ability to do routine HVAC, electrical and mechanical work
  • Ability to read and interpret building plans and control and wiring schematics
  • Sufficient near-visual acuity, depth perception, field of vision and color vision necessary for reading gauges, making connections, soldering, and splicing wires.
  • Ability to give oral and verbal instructions in a precise, understandable manner

Additional Considerations:

  • Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience, installing, servicing, or inspecting electrical components of HVAC equipment. 
  • Able to work with SiteBuilder, EIKON, ViewBuilder and WebCTRL and similar systems
  • Possess a current and valid driver’s license.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Massachusetts Journeyman Electrical or Journeyman HVAC Technician’s License
  • 7-10 years’ experience as a Building Controls Technician
  • Demonstrated willingness to be on essential personnel list for facility related emergencies and University Closings.
  • Similar institution experience.
  • Knowledge of a variety of low voltage systems HVAC controls

This is a full-time, benefited SEIU union position in Grade P18. Anticipated salary based on qualifications within range. Minimum: $72,170, 25th quartile: $82,093 and midpoint of $92,017.
