General Summary of Position:
This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.
This position manages chemical engineering labs, equipment, and facilities, including testing, training, programming, installing, operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting lab equipment for teaching, research, and other academic activities. The position creates and implements a preventative maintenance schedule and performs routine maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments.
Additionally, the position is responsible for instructional support, including but not limited to stocking and maintaining laboratory supplies for courses, collaborating with faculty to set up labs for each course section, overseeing students assigned to the lab, and providing training or instructions to students as needed. At the discretion of the Chair and department instructors, the incumbent may assist with teaching and supervising laboratory courses. This responsibility may involve working closely with faculty, teaching assistants, learning fellows, and students.
The position is also responsible for budgeting, purchasing, acquiring supplies and inventory, and overseeing the procurement of materials with vendors. The role also involves supporting student clubs in regional and national competitions (e.g., AIChE’s Chem-E-Car) and ensuring that students, instructors, and other personnel have completed all required environmental and health safety training for activities in the labs.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Master's in chemical engineering or related field, with 7+ years of relevant experience (will consider candidates with a PhD degree in chemical engineering or related field with 5+ years of relevant experience).
- Comfortable taking initiative, reliable, motivated at work, with a proven ability to collaborate in a team environment.
- Knowledge of laboratory procedures, instrumentation, and safety protocols in chemistry.
- Understanding engineering processes related to lab equipment setup, maintenance, and repair.
- Strong conceptual, analytical, and communication skills
- Ability to create, read, and interpret engineering schematics.
- The ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including students, staff, and faculty.
- Familiar with data acquisition software (e.g., LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python) and process control systems.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

- Exceptional candidates with relevant experience and skills beyond the stated criteria may also be considered.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Previous university-level laboratory experience
- Experience teaching ABET-accredited laboratories
