General Summary of Position:

The Systems Engineer is a key technical member of the Systems Engineering group within Information Technology, responsible for designing computer information systems that support UMass Lowell’s operational needs.
The Systems Engineer possesses a comprehensive understanding of UMass Lowell’s technology platforms, along with the business processes and drivers influencing these platforms. As the lead designer for multiple systems, they are responsible for system design, documentation, and consultation on the implementation of multi-vendor application platforms.
Reporting to the Director of Platforms & Systems Engineering, the Systems Engineer plays a critical role in adopting and integrating new technologies while optimizing existing IT investments. They contribute significantly to the quality and reliability of IT services delivered to both internal and external users of UMass Lowell’s infrastructure.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor's degree required
- 3-5 years in systems design, implementation, and maintenance within a 1,000+ user IT environment.
- Strong commitment to excellent customer service, with a focus on reliable service delivery and effective support.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to explain technical concepts to non-technical users.
- Ability to integrate and manage systems from multiple vendors to achieve organizational goals.
- Strong understanding of cybersecurity principles, including NIST and ISO standards, compliance (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and experience with threat assessment and vulnerability management.
- Proficiency in Windows and Linux operating systems, including advanced skills with Active Directory and Group Policies.
- Experience with scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or Bash.
- Familiarity with automation platforms like Ansible, Puppet, or Chef.
- Experience in administering and managing cloud platforms, including Office 365, Azure, and AWS.
- Knowledge of core network technologies such as DHCP, DNS, routing, subnetting, IPv4 and IPv6, VLANs, load balancing, and firewalls.
- Experience with virtualization technologies such as VMware vSphere, Microsoft Hyper-V, and KVM hypervisors.
- Experience managing databases such as MSSQL, PostgreSQL, and MySQL.
Additional Considerations:
- Experience with VDI environments, such as VMware Horizon or Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops, preferred.
- Experience with automated desktop image creation and deployment preferred.
- Proficiency with systems automation platforms such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or VMware vRealize strongly preferred.
- Relevant industry certifications such as Microsoft Certified: Azure Solutions Architect, CompTIA Security+, VMware Certified Professional (VCP), or AWS Certified SysOps Administrator preferred.
- Experience with modern messaging and collaboration platforms (e.g., Microsoft Exchange, Microsoft 365, Teams), including knowledge of email protocols such as SMTP, IMAP, and modern security practices for message hygiene (e.g., anti-spam and anti-virus tools).
- Experience with database management, particularly Microsoft SQL Server and other enterprise databases.
- Familiarity with infrastructure as code (IaC) practices and tools (e.g., Terraform) preferred.
- Strong understanding of cloud security principles, network segmentation, and zero-trust architecture preferred.
- Familiarity with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
