General Summary of Position:

This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.

Incumbents of this position will assist trades workers in the performance of their duties in a variety of trades (mainly Carpenter, Locksmith, Masonry and Painting). Periodically will be asked to support other trades and the Housekeeping and Grounds Departments. Under the supervision of a trade worker, perform simple trade-related maintenance and repair; maintain machinery; clean jobsites and shops, retrieve tools and parts as needed for trades workers; and maintain other University areas both inside and outside performing related work as required.

The basic purpose of this work is to perform various unskilled, manual tasks in support of the routine maintenance and upkeep of the buildings and grounds of an educational campus.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Demonstrated mechanical aptitude or documented experience
  • Basic knowledge of the use and operation of hand held power tools found in Trades (Carpenter, Locksmith, Masonry and Painting, Grounds and Housekeeping) such as drills, sanders, pipe threading, weed whacker, lawnmower, and vacuums 
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of small hand tools used in the above mentioned trades such as screw drivers, pliers, chisels, hammers, allen wrenches, sockets, plunger, and electrical tester(s), etc.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to know when to contact a trades worker for further guidance or assistance
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
  • Ability to deal tactfully with others
  • Ability to work in a team setting
  • Applicants must have at least one year of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in building custodial or institution housekeeping work; or in landscaping, groundskeeping, park maintenance or tree maintenance

Additional Considerations:

  • Basic mechanical knowledge, experience and understanding of Carpentry, Locksmith, Masonry and/or Painting
  • Possess a current and valid drivers license
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to be on the essential personnel list for facility related emergencies and University closings (including those caused by weather)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated ability and willingness to become an apprentice for one of the skilled trades
  • Proven reliability by supervisor references or other documentation
  • Similar institutional experience
