General Summary of Position:

The School of Education at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks an innovative, equity-minded, collaborative colleague for the position of tenure-track Assistant Professor of Leadership in Schooling & Leadership in Education programs. In alignment with UMass Lowell’s commitment to leadership that centers diversity, equity, and inclusion and advocates for social justice through systemic change, the School is interested in candidates who demonstrate an orientation toward research, teaching, and service that addresses the impact of structural inequities on historically marginalized populations particularly Black, Latino, Indigenous, Southeast Asian, and migrant youth. Qualified candidates are prepared to engage in program improvement efforts and to teach graduate-level online and in-person courses. The School is particularly interested in appointing faculty members who are deeply connected to and integrated into the communities that they study.

Responsibilities include:

  • Teaching online and in-person in the School of Education’s degree-granting programs (Ed.D., Ph.D., M.Ed.).
  • Maintaining a strong research agenda as evidenced by refereed publications and grant funding.
  • Collaborating with other School of Education faculty and UMass Lowell faculty in related social science disciplines to strengthen the research program.
  • Mentoring graduate students in formal and informal capacities.
  • Coordinating or participating in the improvement of academic programs.

The School of Education is part of the College of Fine Arts Humanities and Social Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. The School of Education contributes to the recognized success of UMass Lowell, which is ranked in the top 200 of national research universities (US News and World Report) and is one of the fastest growing universities in the country. Lowell is approximately 25 miles north of Boston and is a mid-size city with a diverse population. It is home to the second largest Cambodian population in the country, but is also home to people whose family heritage includes such countries as Ghana, Uganda, Nigeria, Brazil, and the Caribbean. Because of its place in the history of the industrialization of the USA, the National Park Service established the Lowell National Historical Park (LNHP). The LNHP in collaboration with the COE oversees the Tsongas Industrial History Center, which, each year, brings 40,000 children to Lowell for place-based, experiential learning.

The School of Education currently serves 400 graduate students and 120 undergraduates. The School has 14 tenured or tenure track faculty and five clinical faculty. Education degrees are offered at the undergraduate and graduate level. During the last five years, the School has launched exciting new initiatives to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding student body: a Carnegie-recognized doctoral degree program for school leaders, research-practice partnerships with local school districts, Ph.D. degrees, a US Department of State grant-funded international education program, a new BA Ed degree with dual license in elementary and special education, a UTeach program for undergraduate STEM education, and a Center for Program Evaluation.

The School of Education faculty is composed of engaged and innovative scholars who generate and apply knowledge, create programs, and collaborate with partners, guided by values of democracy, inclusion, excellence, and service. The School is committed to building a diverse faculty in order to fulfill our mission of serving socio-economically, ethnically and linguistically diverse students and promoting global understanding of educational issues.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. or research-based Ed.D. in educational leadership or closely related field
  • Deep understanding of race-based barriers and biases that contribute to persistent social and educational inequalities
  • Expertise in critical inquiry and analysis
  • An emerging agenda for research and publication that centers on equity-related issues
  • Ability to work collaboratively within diverse groups on complex problems

The committee is also interested in candidates with experience:

  • Teaching online at the graduate levels
  • Working closely with practitioners at the school, district, state, or federal level, and other stakeholders (i.e., families, community members, and community-based organizations)
  • Securing grant funding from government agencies and/or foundations
  • Carrying out research-practice partnerships
  • Teaching or conducting research in one or more of the following areas: Equity Leadership, Critical Improvement Science, or other areas that advance the diversity, equity, and inclusion commitments of the university and the School of Education.
