General Summary of Position:
International Student & Scholar Advisor will advise and process documentation pertaining to the following non-immigrant categories: F-1 and J-1 Exchange Visitors and be a point of contact for Colleges, departments, and UML Admissions offices in the area if international student service, international enrollment, academic appointments of J-1 Scholars, immigration advising and SEVIS institutional compliance.
Required to acquire and maintain the following official roles under DHS certification and DOS/OPA designation:
- F-1: Designated School Official
- J-1: Alternate Responsible Officer.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience
- 3-5 years of F, J, international student, and scholar processing/advising
- Full familiarity with all aspects of F and J SEVIS transactions and pertinent regulatory items
- Excellent Computer Skills (Microsoft Office Suite, comfort with databases and web management systems)
- Attention to details and accuracy
- Excellent organizational skills
- Cultural Sensitivity
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Ability to effectively multi-task
- Familiarity with Sunapsis or other similar SEVIS batch interface system required
- U.S. Permanent Resident or U.S. Citizen
CASE MANAGEMENT:
- Responsible for an assigned international student and scholar caseload of current and incoming students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant visa classification. The processing and advising workload will include F-1: Curricular Practical Training, Pre & Post OPT/STEM, Reduction of Course Load, Extensions, etc.; J-1 Academic Training, program extension, employment authorization, etc.
- Responsible for an assigned caseload of new direct-entry student processing and advising, which will include providing some web content, participation in their arrival orientation sessions, as well as document review for SEVIS registration/validation.
- Responsible for document processing/advising of some special non-degree or short-term student groups as assigned.
- Focus on pre-Arrival workflow, Exchange Programs (J-1 students) advising, and on the
- development of (financially) sponsored students’ services that contribute to the international enrollment goals of the division. Co-operate with OMA/Student Affairs to develop cultural programs for this population of sponsored and exchange students. Focus on Experiential Learning processes and advising impacting international enrollment, such as CPT, OPT/STEM, J-1 Student Intern, visiting students, J-1 scholars. This position will be a reference point for UML colleges, departments, and admissions offices.
COMMUNICATION AND OUTREACH:
- Maintain and update some ISSO web content as assigned.
- Participate in the ISSO advising appointments case load.
- Present at the ISSO Informational Coffee Hours and other campus and intercampus meetings as assigned.
- Present on behalf of the UML ISSO at regional or national conferences
SPECIAL PROJECTS:
- Assist ISSO Operations and System Manager with some of the specialized data reports as assigned.
- Work with Executive Director on assigned special projects
- Additional Considerations: Peoplesoft experience preferred
