General Summary of Position:

The Department of Public Health at the University of Massachusetts Lowell seeks an innovative, well established Environmental Health researcher and leader to serve as the director for two nationally renowned institutes.  The candidate will lead key research and engagement initiatives in the area of environmental health, toxics use reduction and hazardous waste management. The successful candidate will have strong expertise and research interests in environmental health, toxics reduction, and sustainability and will be appointed at the associate or full professor level, depending upon qualifications.

Candidates should have a successful track record in securing extramural funding to support and expand their research programs including federal, state, foundation and private sector funds. The department seeks applicants with broad, prevention-oriented research interests that span local, national, and international environmental health challenges in the following areas: toxicology; exposure assessment and control; safety; built environment; pollution prevention; sustainable chemicals and materials and alternatives; and hazards management and prevention. Emphasis will be placed on experience working with interdisciplinary teams and on pragmatic initiatives in the public and private sectors.

The candidate for this position will assume the leadership of two of our centers, with substantial annual budgets:

  1. The internationally recognized Massachusetts Toxics Use Reduction Institute (TURI), which was created as part of the Commonwealth's Toxics Use Reduction Program. TURI conducts research and provides technical support, outreach and education to assist Massachusetts companies and communities in reducing their use of toxic chemicals. The director provides leadership, vision, and supervision for approximately 15 full-time staff, https://www.turi.org/.
  2. The New England Consortium (TNEC), which is the region's federally funded hazardous waste and emergency response worker health and safety training organization with approximately 10 full-time staff, https://www.uml.edu/TNEC/.

The Department of Public Health is located in the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences, a dynamic, growing college that prepares professionals in a wide range of health science fields including applied, clinical and translational areas. A large research program and vibrant community partnerships and engagement opportunities with foundations and industry enrich and support our educational programs. The successful candidate will work with internal collaborators in the college and with UMass Lowell’s Colleges of Engineering and Science, as well as with external academic practice/government/industry partners.

This faculty member will be expected to support growth of graduate and undergraduate environmental health academic programs in the Department and College. Interest and experience in teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in public health is a requirement. The individual will also be engaged in service to the college, including supporting development of curricula in environmental and occupational health. We seek applicants recognized for teaching excellence, scholarly productivity with a vision for sustainability, ability to work with diverse populations, and excellent oral and written communication skills.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Doctoral degree in a field related to environmental health, safety, or public health related chemistry, biomedical sciences, toxicology or engineering, with expertise in pollution prevention or sustainable materials
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups, particularly workers’ organizations, communities, government agencies, and the private industry
  • Strong record of research and publication in a currently tenured position with a record of extramural research support
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and communication skills

Additional Considerations:

  • Research or technical expertise in toxics reduction, sustainable materials and hazardous waste management
  • Experience in fostering interdisciplinary research initiatives
  • Discipline-specific teaching experience preferred
  • Professional certification (CIH, RS, CSP) if relevant, and field experience in government, non-profit sector, or industry
