General Summary of Position:

The Department of Physics and Applied Physics at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for an immediate postdoctoral research associate position in experimental nuclear physics. The postdoctoral researcher will play a leading role in a DOE-funded nuclear physics program involving research at major national user facilities and at the UMass Lowell Radiation Laboratory. Relevant research areas include nuclear structure, nuclear astrophysics, detector development, and related experimental programs using advanced radiation-detection instrumentation, including emerging scintillators and segmented HPGe detectors.

We seek candidates who are interested in taking on significant roles in ongoing experimental programs while also developing and pursuing their own research interests. The successful candidate will work closely with the project investigators and will help mentor graduate and undergraduate students. The UMass Lowell Radiation Laboratory houses a 1-MW research reactor and a 5.5-MV CN Van de Graaff accelerator, and the university The university is situated in the historic city of Lowell, on the Merrimack River located approximately 30 miles northwest of Boston.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • A Ph.D. in experimental nuclear physics or a closely related field is required
  • Good communication and teamwork skills

Additional Considerations:

  • Experience with state-of-the-art nuclear detectors and techniques, as well as multi-parameter digital data acquisition and analysis of accelerator-based experiments, is desirable.

This position is full-time, benefited and in the Grants & Contracts union in grade PD. Anticipated salary based on qualifications within formal range of minimum: $50,000, 25th quartile of: $56,500 and midpoint of $63,000, with expected hiring range of $55,000-$62,000.

This position is contingent upon funding.  The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal based on productivity, performance and the availability of funding.
