General Summary of Position:
The Department of Music in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time, Director of University Bands position to begin September 2026.
We seek an outstanding educator with extensive experience in all facets of administration for marching, concert, jazz, and pep bands at the collegiate level. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department dedicated to preparing students for careers in music through innovative professional programs in Music Education, Music Business, Music Performance, Composition for New Media, and Sound Recording Technology.
The successful candidate will be responsible for all aspects, including instruction, administration, and outreach, of the University Marching Band, Concert Band, Pep Band, and Jazz/Rock Big Band. They will also serve as the Executive Director of the annual Mary Jo Leahey Symphonic Band Camp. Additional duties also include recruitment, and conducting and coordinating music for select university functions.
Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Bachelor’s degree and five years of experience directing Marching/Concert/Jazz/Pep Bands at the University level.
- Similar levels of experience in Music and/or Fine Arts student recruitment.
- Knowledge of high school music programs in the region.
- Excellent communication skills, ability to meet the public well, and experience at computerized data preparation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Graduate degree and 10 years of significant professional experience at the university level, including marching band, concert band, jazz band, and pep band.
- Extensive experience with recruitment and outreach.

This position is a full-time, benefited SEIU union position in grade P21. Anticipated salary based on qualifications and experience within salary range which is: minimum: $94,293, 25th quartile: $108,437 and midpoint: $122,581.
