General Summary of Position: 

The THz instrumentation lab at University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to lead the day-to-day operations of the lab's contributions to the NASA ASTHROS and TIMballoon observatories. Experience with balloon borne astronomical observatory software architecture,testing of THz receiver systems and components for both coherent and direct detector instruments are desired qualifications. 

In addition, the candidate will help the professor set up the new THz instrumentation lab, act as a mentor for undergraduate and graduate researchers working in the lab, serve as lab manager and assist the professor with the development of new project ideas and proposals. 

Daily mentoring of junior colleagues and laboratory management, with independent decision making. 

The work is highly technical and unique. Few, if any, routine well established methods will be used. The candidate will be responsible for developing new techniques and methods and documenting those processes 

Minimum Qualifications (Required): 

Education:

  • A PhD in astrophysics or a related field by the time of appointment.  

Experience:

  • Knowledge of the principles and techniques of the subject discipline.  
  • Knowledge of modern research methods, data collection and analyses.  
  • Knowledge of THz instrumentation and balloon borne observatories.   

Skills: 

  • Instrument and observatory software development.
  • THz receiver system testing.
  • Balloon campaign field support and leadership.
  • Mentoring of junior colleagues. 

Additional Considerations:  

  • Antarctic ballooning is a high-pressure environment with strict delivery deadlines and potentially long travel deployments in remote, harsh environments. 
  • The ability to work effectively with large, diverse groups. 
 
Special Instructions to Applicants:

Only current UML Employees within the Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit will be considered during the first 10 business days of the posting. All other candidates will be considered after that period.

This position is a full-time, benefited union employee in grade PD which has range of minimum: $50,000 to maximum $76,000. Anticipated hiring range of $60,000-$70,000.00 based on grant.

This position is contingent upon funding, and is for one-year contingent on productivity, successful performance and the availability of funding.
