General Summary of Position:

As a temporary member of Counseling Services, this individual will provide clinical services to our student-athlete population. The person in this position will provide confidential direct clinical services in a dedicated office within the Costello Athletic Center or the Counseling Services Office, located in University Crossing. Counseling Clinician will also work collaboratively as a member of the Wellness Center team to support students at UMass Lowell.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide culturally competent clinical services including triage screenings, intake evaluations, diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, crisis intervention, brief individual, couples, and group counseling/psychotherapy, and community referrals for mental health and/or psychiatric treatment. Initiate voluntary and involuntary hospitalization of at-risk students as clinically indicated and coordinate care with UML Police/EMS or psychiatric crisis team as appropriate.
  • Maintain clinical documentation using electronic medical records software and client confidentiality in accordance with Massachusetts law and professional ethical principles.
  • Participate in Counseling Services Case Consultation meetings or review at-risk or complex clients with designated supervisor or Director. Participate in individual clinical supervision meetings.
  • Maintain appropriate professional licensure. Follow professional standards of care, best practices, multicultural competent practices, and engage in ethical decision making. Adhere to all state and federal laws and professional ethical guidelines related to the practice of mental health.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions:

Hours: variable depending on need, maximum hours per week is 10. Visits may be conducted via HIPAA compliant Zoom.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s/Doctoral degree in counseling, psychology, clinical social work or a closely related field and 1-2 years post-advanced degree clinical experience.
  • Experience and knowledge of individual and group counseling and psychotherapy practices, knowledge of developmental psychological theory, understanding of student development and outreach, and cultural competence appropriate for a diverse student population.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with developmental issues common to the 18-25 year old college student population.
  • Ability to perform psychological assessment; provide crisis intervention services; provide effective consultation; maintain appropriate records via an EHR and adhere to professional confidentiality standards.
  • Current independent license to practice in the state of Massachusetts required.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse groups.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 1-2 years of practice within a college or university setting or with college aged students in an alternative setting.
  • Understanding of unique stressors/demands of student athletes.
  • Experience providing clinical services to student athlete population.
  • Experience in providing services such as counseling, outreach, or consultation with student-athletes.
