University of Massachusetts, Lowell has an exciting opening for a full-time Senior Counseling Clinician at Counseling Services (UMLCS), part of the UMass Lowell Wellness Center.  Counseling Services strives to empower, support, and assist students in the pursuit of their academic, professional, and personal endeavors.  Counseling Services clinicians work with undergraduate and graduate students to tackle challenges and remove barriers to growth, change, happiness, peace, or well-being.

The Senior Counseling Clinician will provide culturally competent clinical services including triage assessments, intake evaluations, diagnostic assessments, treatment planning, crisis intervention, brief individual and couples counseling as well as group counseling.  The clinician will assist students requiring long-term or specialized care in connecting with campus and off-campus resources as well as provide psychiatric referrals.  The Senior Counseling Clinician will design and lead advanced training seminars for staff and trainees.  If licensed as a psychologist, the Senior Counseling Clinician will have the opportunity to be a primary supervisor for pre-doctoral psychology interns. 

The Senior Counseling Clinician serves as a mentor, consultant, and/or supervisor to unlicensed or recently licensed clinical staff.  They confer with staff about best practices, ethical questions, and decision-making regarding high risk or complex clinical situations.

The Senior Counseling Clinician will join a strong, hard-working, creative, spirited, dedicated, collaborative, supportive, and positive team of multidisciplinary mental health care providers.  As a staff, we value humor, connection, mutual respect, and creating real, meaningful relationships with our colleagues.  Self-care is built into the practice model at UMLCS.  There is a maximum of five scheduled clinical hours per day, dedicated time for documentation, reserved time for lunch, a clear expectation that no one overworks, and no on-call duties.

Minimum Qualifications (Required): 

  • Master’s degree in clinical social work, counseling, psychology or a closely related field and a minimum of 4 years of post-licensure clinical experience
  • Extensive knowledge of best practices in crisis intervention, clinical assessment, risk assessment, and suicide prevention
  • Commitment to and demonstrated ability to provide multiculturally competent clinical services to a diverse student population
  • Experience in working with developmental issues common to the 18-25 year old college/university student population
  • Current license to practice in relevant clinical/counseling or social work field in U.S.  If licensed in a state other than Massachusetts, ability to obtain Massachusetts licensure within 4 months of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate degree in counseling or psychology
  • Experience working or training in a college or university counseling center
  • Bilingual with experience providing mental health services in language(s) in addition to English

This is a SEIU Professional Union position, Grade P19.
