General Summary of Position:

The Associate Director, Cooperative Education assists in the overall, sustained growth and development of the university’s co-op program. The Associate Director provides leadership towards administration of the co-op program, provides direct service to students, and collaborates extensively with academic and administrative units.

PROGRAM PLANNING & MANAGEMENT:

  • Assist the Director in the administration, coordination, planning and development of the university’s co-op program.
  • Provide oversight for an administrative portion of the co-op program which may include, but is not limited to, curriculum management, operations and enrollment, or external and peer initiatives.
  • Work with academic and administrative units to develop, implement and manage smooth business processes and compliance with regulations and policies.
  • Collaborate with administrative units to proactively implement sound co-op policies and resolve individual student issues.
  • Proactively develop innovative and flexible solutions to meet varying demand for co-op students by identifying appropriate opportunities within the structure of the co-op program.
  • Promote co-op program.

STUDENT ADVISING:

  • Advise assigned students on how to succeed with their co-op goals. This includes
    • assisting students with career issues relevant to their individual situation,
    • preparing students with job search skills and tools to present themselves effectively,
    • evaluating student and employer evaluations and feedback,
    • mediating and resolving student-employer difficulties, and
    • teaching co-op courses.

EMPLOYER DEVELOPMENT & ENGAGEMENT:

  • In coordination with Employer Relations team, develop and engage employers as co-op partners. This may include
    • maintaining employer contact to ensure the success of the co-op program,
    • mediating and resolving student-employer difficulties,
    • monitoring students and employers through on-site visits or calls,
    • coordinating on-campus recruiting activities.

SUPERVISION:

  • Provide supervision and training to Co-op Coordinators, Co-op Instructors, contract or student staff and/or other personnel, according to the Director.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s degree and 8 years related experience OR bachelor’s degree and 10 years related experience
  • Related experience must include at least 3 years in higher education or working with college student populations

Skills:

  • Career-related counseling/advising, communication (interpersonal, verbal, and written), teaching/presenting, program/project management

Additional Considerations:

  • Candidate should be flexible to work evenings and occasional weekends, as needed
  • Ability to travel locally and nationally
  • Strong understanding of UMass Lowell's student population, academic disciplines represented in co-op, and related career and graduate opportunities in academic majors is preferred

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with a co-op program in a higher education setting preferred
  • Ability to work and collaborate with both internal and external partners, such as academic departments and employers
