General Summary of Position:

Under the direction of the Director of Talent Management and Employee Relations, the HR Immigration and Compliance Specialist will oversee and manage immigration support for all international faculty, researchers and staff with a variety of non-immigrant statuses and corresponding work authorization (i.e. H1B, O-1, TN, OPT, STEM, J-1, E-3,  F-1, etc.).  The position will also coordinate employer permanent residency sponsorship. Will partner with UMass Immigration Counsel to offer institutional guidance on all aspects of immigration advising pertaining to above-mentioned populations.  Will work with the International Students and Scholars Office (ISSO) as well as the Offices of the Provost and Institutional Compliance to strengthen regulatory compliance and streamline international employee policy.  The HR Immigration and Compliance Specialist will serve as the key point of contact for university compliance and cross-functional alignment supporting the international employee populations.  They will also be responsible for reviewing, advising and approving offer letters for non-immigrant faculty, staff and researchers as well as collaborating with HR colleagues on I-9 compliance, international and domestic taxation, wage and union issues.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree, with 3-5 years related experience as an immigration specialist in HR, immigration paralegal or other related position with a focus on facilitating immigration processes and procedures for international hires
    • Or
  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent, with a minimum of 8 years related experience as an immigration specialist, or other related position with a focus on facilitating immigration processes and procedures for international hires
  • Proficient in webmaster
  • Proficient in MS Office
  • Proficient in Excel
  • Understanding of employment immigration processes, as it relates to non-immigrant visas, permanent residency sponsorship, and the hiring of foreign nationals in the U.S
  • Must be a US Citizen or Legal Permanent Resident to meet SEVIS requirements
  • Experience working with international students, faculty and/or staff
  • Experience using immigration case management software, e.g. Sunapsis and/or SEVIS

  • Ability to communicate in a cross-cultural environment with sensitivity to the diversity and complexity of international scholar and employee issues and concerns
  • Detail oriented with superior multitasking, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Must have tact and diplomacy; be flexible and professional at all times with sound judgement, discretion, and humor
  • High comfort level with working autonomously
  • Overall strong computer skills; proficiency in Microsoft Office software

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Higher Education experience preferred
  • Experience using HRIS system: PeopleSoft, ADP, etc.
  • Experience using an immigration case management system: Sunapsis, LawLogics, etc.
