General Summary of Position:

This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor, Facilities Management and will work closely with leadership under the Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation. This position will serve as the primary liaison with researchers, Environmental Health & Safety, and Facilities to develop and manage programs and processes for successful research operations, efficient space utilization, and effective equipment and lab system maintenance on the UMass Lowell campus. They will coordinate a range of maintenance and service support activities for laboratory and research spaces, lab equipment, and connected building systems.  They will blend their technical knowledge of facilities, research and lab safety with strong interpersonal skills to build a collaborative and synergistic environment and maintenance program for research facilities that supports ongoing growth of the research mission of the university.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • BA/BS in Science or Engineering or related field
  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years will consider candidates with Masters with 12 years or Ph.D. and 10 years of progressively responsible experience in managing technically sophisticated scientific research equipment and space in higher ed, clean biotech, health care, manufacturing facilities or similar institutions and the related operational hazards and requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong, effective leadership in areas related to laboratory safety, research equipment and facilities infrastructure
  • Demonstrated experience in project management, program and policy development and implementation
  • Availability and ability to remain on call 24/7 in cases of emergency
  • If not certified as a hazardous materials responder, must successfully complete training courses within 120 days of employment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Must have ability to travel quickly between campuses and to off campus assignments

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or Ph.D. in Science, Engineering or Business Administration. PE, CPE or CPMM is preferred
  • Previous experience developing policy and implementing procedures for highly specialized science and engineering buildings, laboratories and research operations
  • Professional experience in a highly dynamic higher education environment
  • Experience working with unionized trade environments
