The College of Visual and Performing Arts at the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth is seeking an Assistant Teaching Professor to teach in both its Animation and Game Arts program, as a 2D animation specialist, and in its Illustration program as a general instructor. This position would begin in September 2024.

The individual appointed to this position will teach a variety of introductory, intermediate, and advanced digital animation and illustration courses. The successful candidate will lead undergraduate classes, work on an individual basis with graduate students, contribute to the curricular developments of both programs, and perform other aspects pertaining to the conduct of the department, such as advising undergraduate students, serving on department and college committees, and other duties as assigned. This is not a tenured or a tenure-track position. The expected teaching load for a studio Assistant Teaching Professor would be six classes per academic year.

Minimum qualifications: MFA or terminal degree in the fields of animation or illustration, or a related discipline (e.g., Interactive Media, Visual Effects, etc.), 4+ years of substantial, professional 2D animation or illustration practice. Also required is teaching experience at the collegiate level; and documented success in student learning with an emphasis on 2D digital animation and illustration.

Preferred qualifications: Documented success in student learning in storyboarding, storytelling, digital rendering, and/or basic and advanced animation and illustration production; Facility with software such as Adobe Photoshop, Animate and After Effects, Procreate, Toon Boom Harmony, Storyboard Pro, and Blender’s Grease Pencil; An active record of scholarship and professional achievement.

Application materials must include: A letter addressing qualifications; curriculum vitae; a link to your digital portfolio or 20 samples of own work that demonstrate both animation and illustration capabilities. Also: 20 samples of student work; examples of syllabi and assignments; statement of teaching philosophy; artist or professional statement; the names and contact information for three references.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts (CVPA) at UMass Dartmouth has full NASAD accreditation for its undergraduate and graduate programs.
