General Summary of Position:

The University of Massachusetts Lowell recently received through the U.S. Department of Education, the Asian American Native American Pacific Islander Serving Institutions (AANAPISI) grant, which aims to mitigate AAPI students’ barriers to educational achievement by enhancing institutional programs and services.

The AANAPISI Program Coordinator will be responsible for conducting outreach and recruitment efforts to AAPI students, promote UMass Lowell’s AANAPISI program, provide educational awareness of AAPI needs, concerns & issues to the UML community, and supports the mission and goals of the AANAPISI five-year grant funded program.

The aim is to increase AAPI college degree attainment and overall student success. The AANAPISI Program Coordinator collaborates with the Program Director and campus partners to implement educational programs, provide culturally appropriate direct services to the AACEE student cohort program such as personal, cultural support and collaborate on facilitating career preparedness, student wellbeing and wellness, financial awareness & literacy, and identity development topics. The AANAPISI Program Coordinator will develop training materials and conduct workshops and trainings, and other duties as assigned.

Job Duties:

1. Coordinate support services and educational programming under the Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement (AACEE):

  • Coordinate, lead, and assess programs that enhance Asian American student engagement and success.
  • Act as a liaison between Asian American students and staff for campus services including Career & Co-Op Center, Student Activities & Leadership, Admissions, Advising, Centers for Learning, and Financial Aid Departments.
  • Interact with the Lowell community by providing financial literacy sessions at community sites serving target populations.
  • Assist the development, implementation, and support of innovative practices, policies and programming that promote student achievement and degree completion with an emphasis on closing the achievement gaps in college completion.
  • Create an atmosphere for AAPI students to feel welcomed, supported, and comfortable; support divisional & campus strategies on student wellbeing.
  • Serve on campus committees.
  • Attend professional workshops and conferences to maintain and advance professional knowledge in applicable areas.

2. Student Retention Efforts:

  • Develop, implement, and coordinate strategies that meet AANAPISI grant objectives for persistence and completion.
  • Provide culturally appropriate direct services to AAPI students to clarify academic and career short- and long-term goals.
  • Mentor Asian American students to support their personal growth, campus involvement, acquiring tools for personal and professional development, and academic success.

3. Student Outreach & Recruitment Efforts:

  • Coordinate and partner outreach activities; working collaboratively with Admissions; provide AANAPISI program information to individuals, local community organizations.
  • Handle logistics for campus visits for prospective students from community-based organizations.
  • Develop and conduct periodic culturally responsive workshops for college campus community, student ambassadors and student workers to meet the needs of AAPI students.
  • Develop, organize, and monitor program activities, events to recruit eligible AAPI students to meet grant program objectives.
  • Promote recruitment efforts which include visits to secondary schools and community-based organizations.
  • Represent UML-AANAPISI at community functions and related AAPI community meetings.
  • Conduct and prepare training materials for student orientation sessions, classroom presentations, and college campus community presentations and workshops.
  • Assist with the development of a branding & outreach strategy for the Asian American Center for Excellence & Engagement including website, print & social media.
    • Prepare marketing and promotional materials, including media packages, and interface with Univ. Relations & Admissions on marketing strategies.
  • Prepare and monitor outreach master calendar activities.

4. Supervision and Data Management:

  • Provide oversight & supervision of AACEE student employees, practicums, etc.
    • Coordinate the AANAPISI peer mentors, etc.
  • Maintain student files, coding, and all paperwork.
    • Develop & execute communication plan & strategies
    • Monitor student progress through Salesforce, SIS, and other platforms
  • Support UML-AANAPISI reporting and data gathering strategies.

Other Job Duties:

  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:
     •  Bachelor’s degree in Behavioral, Social Science, or related field. Masters preferred.

Experience:
     •  Minimum of 2-3 years of experience in higher education
     •  Demonstrated ability with advising, mentoring, coaching models, while developing, implementing and evaluating student support and engagement programs.
     •  Demonstrated ability to proactively develop and maintain positive relationships with students to support social, emotional, and academic wellbeing.
    •  Knowledge of and sensitivity to AAPI issues and the educational needs of high-need AAPI students from diverse ethnic, economic, and cultural backgrounds.
    •  Demonstrated ability to lead training, workshops, and educational programs for UML students, staff, and faculty, especially on the college access experience, identity development of AAPIs, financial literacy, and student wellbeing.
Skills:
   •  Ability to establish program priorities, monitor progress toward achieving program goals, and conducts assessment to evaluate program effectiveness, and coach student employees toward similar goals.
   •  Hold a multidimensional view with a strong understanding of the complexities and issues that affect underrepresented students and their academic and personal success.
  •  Excellent collaboration, organizational, administrative, and communication skills; be able to multitask and meet deadlines.
  •  Ability to provide leadership and guidance to various student cohorts, groups, and individuals to achieve their mission and goals. One should be collaborative and responsive to managing multiple relationships and projects, adapting to new priorities, and being responsive as needs change.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated experience working with South-East Asian American students and communities
  • Bilingual skills, particularly in Cantonese, Mandarin, Khmer, or Vietnamese

This is a Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit position, Grade P15.
