General Summary of Position:

The Assistant Director’s role is to provide direction and leadership for the vibrant Greek Life community and those interested in civic engagement at UMass Lowell. This role will aid a campus community in which all students are encouraged and supported in the cultivation of social, cultural, intellectual, service, and leadership programming. With the advisement of 10 Greek Organizations and non-Greek clubs, this level of support provides students the opportunity to strengthen their abilities to become leaders in and out of the classroom. This personal and organization growth will allow students to create lasting relationships that will prove to be valuable and meaningful long after graduation. In addition, this position will provide students the opportunity to grow dynamic marketable skills through leadership development, program management and philanthropic experiences.

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership creates cultural, social, educational and leadership opportunities, enhancing the overall learning and development of students.  The office has over 250 clubs and organizations and works with these and other student leaders to embrace diversity and collaboration; shaping visionary leaders of tomorrow.

Specific Responsibilities Include:

  • Support Greek Life organizations in areas such as community development, student training, programming, recruitment, alumni relationships, member development, and exec-board transition.
  • Co - advise Greek Council and advise the Greek Life Living Learning Community.
  • Collaborate with departments across campus and the Lowell community to establish civic engagement opportunities, participate in University outreach to provide opportunities for student engagement and create data points in order to evaluate and assess the impact on the students and the community.
  • Serve as a Program Advisor in all areas of program planning for non-Greek organizations on campus.
  • Assist in the selection, supervision, and mentorship of Graduate Fellows who play a vital role in the day to day operations of the office and the larger program.
  • Work with university partners including Athletics to increase student engagement in Athletic events, both general knowledge and special events. Provide assistance for University traditions and annual events, including Up Till Dawn, Greek Olympics, and annual community service days.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel/Counseling, or related field
  • Two plus years of experience with Student Activities, Student Union, Leadership, and/or Student Government on a college campus.
  • Demonstrated experiences with Greek Life and Community outreach on a college campus, collegiate club/organizational management.
  • Proven experience and proficiency in fiscal management, advising, time management, and program advising.
  • Knowledge and experience with university based student programming, including large scale programming and event management.
  • Experience with advising and supervision of college aged students.
  • Proven experience working effectively with diverse groups.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse constituents including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community agencies
  • Knowledge and experience working with Student Information System (SIS) or similar system, Organization database software, online scheduling software, and Microsoft office, especially Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships across campus through effective communication
  • Knowledge and experience understanding student development in theory and practice
  • Knowledge and experience with alumni and Headquarters staff in regards to Greek life
  • Ability to handle confidential materials and information and maintain confidentiality
