General Summary of Position:

The primary responsibilities of the Assistant Director pertain to the enrichment of the co-curricular experience at UMass Lowell.  This role establishes and maintains an active, highly-visible, and deeply-engaged presence to sustain and grow strong collaborative relationships with student leaders, faculty, and staff.  This position enriches the quality of life on campus through the development of community building, celebration of traditions, and student advisement.  Oversight of the Program Board, late night/summer programming space and advising of approximately 60 clubs are key roles for this position. In addition, this position will work specifically to develop students’ self-awareness, leadership, and self-advocacy through oversight of their work with clubs and organizations in developing and executing programs for various audiences throughout the University.

The Office of Student Activities and Leadership creates cultural, social, educational and leadership opportunities, enhancing the overall learning and development of students.  The office has over 250 clubs and organizations and works with these and other student leaders to embrace diversity and collaboration; shaping visionary leaders of tomorrow.

Specific Responsibilities Include: 

  • Advise and mentor student members of Association of Campus Events (ACE) to develop, assess, and implement events that address the cultural, educational and social needs of a diverse student population.
  • Provide assistance for University traditions and annual events that are embraced by the students and the community, including support of Opening Week, Homecoming, Open House, Welcome Back Weekend, Spring Carnival, and Commencement. Additionally, support new initiatives and the development of new traditions.
  • Oversee an on campus programming space that include late night programming, student employment, and summer programming to assist with orientation.
  • Assist in the selection, supervision, and mentorship of Graduate Fellow who play a vital role in club and org advising and development, The Fox Common, and Greek Life Support.
  • Serve as a Program Advisor in all areas of program planning and support club advisors in that role, as assigned.
  • Serve as the advisor for the Senior Class and co-coordinator of Alumni Ambassador program. These groups work with Advancement, Alumni, and student volunteers to host events and connect with young alumni through outreach and events.
  • work with university partners including Athletics to increase student engagement in Athletic events, both general knowledge and special events.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s Degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel/Counseling, or related field 
  • Two plus years of experience with Student Activities, Student Union, Leadership, and/or Student Government on a college campus
  • Must possess organizational and management skills, including demonstrated experiences with Program Boards, Clubs, and/or SGA
  • Proven experience and proficiency in fiscal management, advising, time management, and program advising
  • Knowledge and experience with university based student programming, including large scale programming and event management
  • Proven experience working effectively with diverse groups

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively with diverse constituents including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, administrators, and community agencies
  • Knowledge and experience working with Student Information System (SIS) or similar system, Organization database software, online scheduling software, and Microsoft office, especially Excel and PowerPoint
  • Ability to create and maintain relationships across campus through effective communication
  • Knowledge and experience understanding student development in theory and practice
  • Knowledge and experience with social media, marketing, and website development
  • Ability to handle confidential materials and information and maintain confidentiality
