Director of Business Development for E2I

General Summary of Position:

The Director of Business Development (DBD) will be hired through the Department of Mechanical Engineering but will work within the multi-disciplinary Emerging Energy Innovation Institute (E2I).  The DBD will be responsible for fostering relationships with energy industry companies as well as state and federal agencies involved in energy funding, policy, and research.  The DBD will also be responsible for marketing and acquiring external funding to support the E2I. 

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Networking, Branding and Visibility:
    • Secure and help organize at least 2 events at UMass Lowell to highlight E2I research, education, and resources
    • Secure at least two energy-related visibility opportunities in Massachusetts (e.g., panel, booth, speaker)
    • Develop a speaker’s bureau of UMass Lowell personnel to speak at various energy conferences on UMass Lowell efforts
    • Host a minimum of four tours of UML campus to prospective energy-related groups (e.g., companies, government, non-profit, donors)
    • Develop a calendar of energy-related meetings/events and targeted UMass Lowell participation (e.g., student involvement vs. just high-level, one representative vs. many people)
  1. Funding:
    • Identify, reach out to, and set up meetings with at last 12 companies to discuss projects and partnering (and determine strategy for meetings and faculty who should be included)
    • Working with AIM foundation to find topics of policy and technological knowledge of major energy issues which require in-depth analysis
    • Develop collaboration with UMass Boston on policy issues
    • Identify other sources of funding to meet the goals and objectives of E2I
  1. Strategy:
    • Assist in the MassCEC funded marketing survey of companies to identify research opportunities to advance the technological capabilities of the energy sector
    • Working with the E2I leadership, create an advisory committee of individuals that would be influential to the success of E2I
    • Provide a slide deck or other written material (briefing) that describes the New England energy ecosystem – e.g., how the utilities (National Grid, Eversource, etc.), ISO, other stakeholders all interact, who makes decisions, what types of programs exist, funding that may be available for UML, etc. that all have an effect on potential E2I funding and strategic directions. This briefing will be used to educate the faculty, staff, and students of E2I and to assist with strategic planning for growth and funding of E2I.
  1. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:
    • Build effective partnerships with co-workers throughout the University by freely sharing appropriate information and providing assistance when needed.
    • Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
    • Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to personal of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.
    • Provide support to University relations to highlight the successes of E2I (e.g., acquisition of new funding, grants received, company memberships, research innovations developed, and recommendations for target audiences and media outlets)

The employee will work in standard office space within the College of Engineering.  Some travel will be required to support outreach activities both in Massachusetts as well as to other states.

The marketing, outreach activities, and strategic initiatives will be defined for the position in consultation with Dr. Christopher Niezrecki, Chair of Mechanical Engineering or Dr. Julie Chen, Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • The candidate must have a Bachelors degree with at least 5-8 years of related experience.
  • Significant experience in interacting and communicating with energy related companies. 

Additional Considerations:

The preferred candidate will have experience in communications and marketing and also have a knowledge of the energy landscape both in industry and government.

Only current UML Employees within the Grants & Contracts (MTA/GRACE) bargaining unit will be considered during the first 10 business days of the posting. All other candidates will be considered after that period.

This position is contingent upon funding and is for 25 hours per week. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal contingent upon funding and successful performance.
