General Summary of Position:

The Department of Political Science at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applicants for an Assistant Professor in Political Theory beginning in the fall of 2020. The successful candidate will have a demonstrable record of scholarship and teaching. All fields within political theory will be considered. Preference will be given to scholars whose research intersects with one of the two research strengths of the Department: Political Communication and Global Peace, Conflict, and Security. Other areas of interest include critical race theory, feminist theory, queer theory, intersectionality, or other approaches to identity. In terms of teaching, candidates should be prepared to teach introductory courses on ancient and modern political theory, democratic theory, and upper level courses in their specialty areas. Current workload guidelines assign a 2/2 teaching load to research productive scholars.  Responsibilities include maintaining an active program of research, including pursuit of external funding if appropriate; teaching undergraduate and graduate level courses; engaging in departmental and university service.

The Political Science Department is housed within the University’s College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (FAHSS). The College is the largest unit of the University, with 11 academic departments and over 200 full time faculty.  FAHSS has experienced significant growth in recent years, including hiring more than 75 new faculty members, achieving 70% growth in funded research expenditures, and the addition of several new interdisciplinary graduate programs. The Department of Political Science features a growing and diverse body of faculty with research and teaching interests that cut across different geographical, methodological and thematic areas. The department has experienced significant enrollment growth in its undergraduate major (which includes specializations in American Politics, Political Communication, International Politics, and Law & Politics), and has played an integral role in the College’s interdisciplinary graduate programs, including its PhD in Global Studies, Masters degree program in Peace and Conflict Studies, and the new MPA. Department faculty are engaged in leadership roles for a range of campus-wide research and experiential learning initiatives, including the Model UN Program, Emerging Scholar Program, the UMass Lowell Center for Public Opinion, Climate Change Initiative, and International Study Abroad Programs. Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. in Political Science or related field (or have finished requirements for the degree by the start of the appointment (fall of 2020)
  • Evidence of strong teaching ability
  • Established record of publication and/or conference dissemination displaying a clear research agenda in areas of research
