General Summary of Position:

The UML Health Education Coordinator will work collaboratively with UML health and mental health professionals, Student Affairs colleagues, students, faculty and staff, and surrounding community members to achieve the goals of the Health Education and Promotion Department and UMass Lowell.  The successful candidate will be an important member of the Health Education and Promotion Department team and will be a part of Wellness Center initiatives.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Participates in the planning, development, design, implementation and evaluation of all HEP department initiatives and program objectives.
  • Initiates programmatic prevention strategies within the campus community.
  • Along with the Director of HEP serves as a resource for staff, faculty, student, parents and others regarding prevention program information the University values and expectations to students and their parents.
  • Train faculty and staff, and student staff (Healthy HAWKS, CAPES and RAs) about environmental prevention strategies, behavioral indicators, campus resources, and referral procedures associated with health education and promotion
  • Work collaboratively with programming entities on campus to increase prevention awareness, cohesive programming and student involvement.
  • Assist in collecting and analyzing data on prevention and early intervention for the Health Education and Promotion
  • Be an active member in the community-campus partnership to reduce underage drinking, illegal drug use towards reducing adverse risk taking behaviors
  • Along with the Director of HEP oversee and work with campus community on the regulatory requirements related to AOD and sexual assault prevention education initiatives.
  • Be able to analyze and synthesize research literature and have the ability to communicate the literature to students and other populations.
  • Other duties as delegated by the Director of Health Education.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree in public health, health education, higher education, or related field required
  • Significant experience (three to five years), including supervision of staff and experience in creating, developing and implementing programs based on the public health model of environmental prevention programs for the traditional college age population
  • Knowledge of public health, alcohol prevention, sexual assault prevention education, health in higher education, and the impact of risk taking behaviors on the traditional college age student
  • Commitment to and evidence of program design/delivery that enhances the safety and well-being of our students in a multicultural environment
  • Flexibility required managing complex roles and processes within a dynamic work environment
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, excellent presentation and organizational skills, and well-developed written and oral communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in public health, health education, higher education, or related field
  • Demonstrated ability to work with specific at risk groups
  • Demonstrated competency in training and motivating large groups
  • Demonstrated competency in program and organizational development
  • Certified Prevention Specialist, Health Education Specialist (CHES), Certified in Public Health (CPH), or eligible and intent to become certified

This is a temporary, part-time (18 hours per week), non-benefited, non-unit position.
