General Summary of Position:

The Chemistry Department at UMass Lowell is looking to hire a Postdoctoral Research Associate.  The purpose of this position is primarily to drive innovate nanomaterials and energy-related research. The postdoctoral associate will work closely with faculty, other post-doctoral associates, graduate students, undergraduate students on the synthesis, characterization, and analysis of nanomaterials.

Essential Job Duties:

1. Research: Perform research under the supervision of the Principal Investigator. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will:

  • Design and synthesize the functional nanomaterials
  • Develop protocols to synthesize a diverse set of metallic nanoparticles and nanomaterials
  • Establish optical and spectroscopic techniques for the characterization of their physical, chemical, and optical properties
  • Conduct lab experiments, collect and analyze data, and report in electronic lab notebook
  • Engage in shared lab duties including maintenance of instruments and apparatus, lab safety and lab cleaning

2.  Collaboration: Establish collaborations within the research group, with other groups on campus and outside the University

  • Review literature
  • Coordinate interactions with other groups and lead discussions and conference calls

3. Supervise graduate and undergraduate students:  The postdoctoral associate will be expected to lead, work with, and mentor both graduate and undergraduate students in their research projects

  • Teach graduate and/or undergraduate students lab techniques
  • Establish Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for the group for existing and new techniques and protocols
  • Assist students in writing, developing presentation skills, and coordinating interactions with collaborators

4. Administrative and Data Integrity:  The postdoctoral associate will be expected to participate in active knowledge sharing and effectively record all data

  • Ensure all tasks are accomplished on time and to the highest standard
  • Prepare weekly progress reports
  • Prepare research reports to funding agencies
  • Conduct weekly project meeting with PI and collaborators
  • Participate in weekly group meetings

5. Writing and Presentation:  The postdoctoral associate will be expected to effectively communicate research in a written and oral manner

  • Write manuscripts and prepare for publications
  • Present research in conferences
  • Attend and present results at local, national, and international conferences when appropriate

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Chemistry with nanomaterials expertise
  • Expertise in metallic nanomaterials
  • Strong independent problem-solving skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills

Additional Considerations:

  • Demonstrated research accomplishments
  • Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and writing
  • Ability to work in a team environment

This position is contingent upon funding. The initial appointment will be for one year with a possibility of renewal contingent upon funding and successful performance.
