General Summary of Position:

The Network Engineer is an advanced technical staff member in the Network Services group in Information Technology. The Network Engineer is responsible for the architecture, design, and configuration of network-related systems to meet the business needs of UMass Lowell.

Under the direction of the Manager of Network Services, the Network Engineer executes the overall vision and strategy related to University network systems. They are responsible for recommending, designing, and implementing short and long term network infrastructure initiatives including wired and wireless network design, network architecture, and developing strategies for integrating new network-based services.

They work closely with the Network Services team, project managers, and information security staff to provide robust and highly available network services. As required, they also configure wired and wireless network equipment, trouble shoot end-user network issues using software and hardware tools, repair and install network equipment, and provide end-user support. They are integral in the overall services delivered to all internal and external users of UMass Lowell’s IT service catalog.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher required
  • Industry-recognized certifications such as Extreme Networks Specialist (ECS), Aruba Certified Solutions Professional, Aruba Certified Mobility Associate, or Cisco Certified Network Associate
  • A strong commitment to providing excellent customer service and ensuring the success of our customers
  • Six or more years hands-on experience in network engineering and design with increasing responsibility in a complex environment
  • Six or more years of hands-on experience designing and supporting network routing, switching, and wireless systems in an Enterprise or University setting
  • Six or more years hands-on experience with physical cabling, cabling standards, copper and fiber terminations, and related technologies to support these functions
  • Three or more years of experience implementing and supporting wireless standards, wireless encryption, and authentication systems
  • Operational mastery of the Windows OS and other OS systems used by network services (i.e. Unix/Linux)
  • Thorough understanding of the OSI network model, Ethernet, TCP/IP, OSPF, BGP, and SNMP
  • Excellent problem-solving skills
  • The ability to explain complex technical concepts to non-technical users
  • Comprehensive knowledge of DNS, DHCP, and data network technologies as they relate to the design and delivery of network services
  • Experience using test equipment and diagnostic tools to resolve wired and wireless issues, including hand held Fluke meters, Wireshark, and the analysis of packet captures

Additional Considerations:

  • Additional industry-recognized certifications such as Extreme Networks Expert (ECE)
  • Experience designing, configuring, and troubleshooting network equipment from Extreme Networks and Aruba Networks wireless systems
  • Experience with network technologies such as firewalls, VoIP, RADIUS, and bandwidth management solutions
  • Experience with HP OpenView, Ridgeline, NetSight, Cacti, NetScout, and analysis of packet captures
