General Summary of Position:

The Department of Music in the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University of Massachusetts Lowell invites applications for a full-time, Associate Director of Bands position to begin July 2026.

We seek an outstanding educator with extensive experience in all facets of administration for marching, concert/outreach bands, jazz, and pep bands at the collegiate level. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department dedicated to preparing students for careers in music through innovative professional programs in Music Education, Music Business, Music Performance, Composition for New Media, and Sound Recording Technology.

The Associate Director of Bands will assist in the management of the university’s comprehensive band program, including instruction, administration, live sound, and outreach for the bands. They will assist in providing instruction in the marching band, pep bands, and youth outreach ensembles. The successful candidate will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in conducting, teaching, student mentorship, personnel management, community engagement, fundraising, recruiting, and contributing to the academic mission of our R1 institution. This is a year-round position with a fluctuating schedule which includes regular night and weekend commitments for rehearsals and performances.

The Department of Music offers undergraduate programs in Composition for New Media, Music Business, Music Studies, Performance, and Sound Recording Technology, and supports interdisciplinary collaborations across the arts, engineering, and digital media. Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Master’s degree, with a principal instrument in woodwinds, brass, or percussion
  • Experience teaching bands at the University level
  • Proficiency in marching band techniques
  • Excellent communication skills, ability to meet the public well
  • Management & Administrative experience: responsibilities include scheduling, transportation for large groups, personnel management, student management
  • Experience in Music and/or Fine Arts student recruitment.
  • Knowledge of high school music programs in the region,

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Doctorate/terminal degree
  • Significant professional experience with marching band and/or drum and bugle corps
  • Teaching/directing collegiate athletic bands
  • Teaching at the university level, including marching band, concert band, jazz band, and/or pep band.
  • Teaching marching band and/or drum and bugle corps including winds (woodwind/brass), and/or percussion and/or visual design (drill)
  • Extensive experience with recruitment and outreach.

This position is a full-time, benefited and SEIU union position in grade P21. Anticipated salary based on qualifications within the grade/range. Minimum: $94,293, 25th quartile of $108,437 and midpoint of $122,581.
