General Summary of Position:

As part of the command staff, Support Operations Lieutenant, will assist the Chief and Deputy Chief of Police, in the management of the day-to-day operation of the Police Department. Will provide leadership and direction to all Sergeants and or patrol officers under his control, with regards to the day-to-day operations of the police department.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of police administration.
- Knowledge of the techniques of conducting employee performance evaluations.
- Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision.
- Ability to determine proper format and procedure assembling items of information.
- Ability to write concisely to express thoughts clearly and develop ideas in logical order.
- Ability to plan training or instruction.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of investigation, interview and interrogation, fact-finding, and summation.
- Knowledge of the provisions of the state laws governing administrative hearings.
Minimum Entrance Requirements:
- Applicants must have at least (A) three years of full-time, or equivalent part-time experience in governmental police force or in law enforcement work and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate’s Degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.
II. A Bachelor’s Degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience. *
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated based on the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Significant experience in a governmental police/security force and completion of graduate level degree requirements in criminal justice, criminology, behavioral science or sociology
Special Requirement:
- Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Class 3 Motor Vehicle Operators License.
- Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a University Police Officer under Massachusetts General Law Chapter 75 ss 32A, Chapter 22C; ss 63, and Chapter 37; ss 3 and appointment as Deputy Sheriff of Middlesex County.
- The appointee shall have completed a certified police academy that meets acceptable standards applicable to the Municipal Police Training Committee.
- Appointee will be licensed to carry and qualify with a firearm as a condition of employment.
