General Summary of Position:

The Assistant Director of Fitness and Recreation Center Operations will oversee all-day-to-day operations of the Campus Recreation Center and Riverview Fitness Center.  Primary responsibilities will include oversight of facility supervisors, facility attendants, emergency response, facility scheduling and upkeep.  In addition, the Assistant Director will be responsible for the management of all Personal Training related services and Fitness and Wellness Programs.

Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate 80+ student and part-time professional employees to fulfill various responsibilities.  Administer program policies, procedures, and protocols throughout Campus Recreation facilities.  Manage the day to day operations of the Recreation Center and Riverview Fitness Center to include equipment management, cleaning, preventative maintenance, inspections, and customer service.

The Assistant Director will coordinate all facility inspections and work orders for the Recreation Center and Riverview Fitness Center.  Assists facilities operations, in conjunction with Associate Director, by identifying and coordinating building repairs, maintenance, and safety requirements, recommending facility improvements, assisting with maintenance of inventory control records on furnishings and equipment, and coordinating maintenance repair and follow-up.

Coordinate all aspects of the personal training program to include:

Oversee Exercise is Medicine (EIM) program.  Cultivate relationships and collaborations with Wellness Center units and The College of Health Sciences to improve program. Work with personal trainers and EP/PT interns to oversee 30+ EIM student clients each year.   Review client personal training applications and work with physicians to receive medical clearance for clients when necessary. Review student personal trainer’s workout programs for clients and make suggestions and modifications when necessary to ensure prescribed exercise programs are safe and based on current science.    Serve as the primary point of contact for 50+ personal training participants who attend 1,000+ client sessions annually.

Collaborate with the Associate Director to coordinate fitness and wellness instructional programs.  Recruit, hire, train, schedule and evaluate 2+ interns as well as utilize other fitness staff as necessary to assist with fitness and wellness programming. Work with other on-campus partners to collaborate on new programs or enhance current programs where appropriate.  Serve as the primary point of contact for 500+ participants in over 10+ programs which can include, but are not limited to: incentive programs, educational workshops, wellness fairs, and instructional fitness classes. 

Administrative Duties: 

Below is a list of administrative duties that are necessary in each of the essential job duties. 

  • Evaluate participation statistics each semester and for annual reporting. 
  • Identify short and long term goals for use in area assessment, learning outcomes, and strategic planning, as well as participate in needs assessment for program and facilities. 
  • Oversee planned budget to including monthly budgeting, payroll, maintenance  and equipment. 
  • Monitor fitness and student trends and implement programs that are safe and science-based to help meet the needs of our students and university community. 
  • Maintain website and assist with marketing of each fitness and wellness program in alignment with departmental marketing plan. 
  • Utilize program and departmental software as needed including EZ Facility, HRDirect Google Drive, Microsoft Teams and Tririga (work orders) . 
  • Administer Campus Recreation risk management protocols throughout all recreation facilities. 
  • Assist with the purchasing and long term planning of fitness equipment inventory. 
  • Assist with maintenance and set up of all facilities utilized by programs. 
  • Administer fitness program and facility policies, procedures, and protocols framed around fostering relationships with participants, creating an inclusive environment, and developing excellence in student staff. 

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science/ Physiology, Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Administration / Management or a closely related field
  • Appropriate experience and certifications can also substitute for preferred degree concentrations listed above

 Experience:  

  • 3-5 Years previous experience in Fitness and Wellness and risk management protocols
  • 3-5 years previous experience working with college aged students

Skills: 

  • Current national certification in CPR/AED and First Aid Training

Additional Considerations:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to relate effectively with college students, university community, children, and parents
  • Problem-solving and decision-making skills
