General Summary of Position:

Responsible for assisting the University in maintaining compliance with various Federal, State and Local regulations pertaining to environmental, occupational, educational, and public health/safety programs.   Works under the direction of the Hazardous Materials Manager who reports to the Executive Director of EHS.

This role includes the management of contractors to removed hazardous materials (chemical, infectious, biological, asbestos) from spaces on campus through various methods including, decontaminations, abatements, sampling, materials shipments, and lab packs. As well designing infrastructure that will allow UMass Lowell to internalize work that is currently contracted out. Including but not limited to small to medium scale decontaminations and asbestos sampling.

Additionally, this role includes the supervision of UML’s Main Hazardous Waste Accumulation Areas (MAAs) and Satellite Waste Accumulation Areas (SAAs). Including compliance, hygiene, program development, and emergency response.

The position also requires the maintenance of records including hazardous materials manifests, return copies, invoices, quotes, and oil skimmer logs. The position must be able to quickly produce these records in a neat and timely manner upon request by regulators.

The role supports all parts of the EHS program and Office of Hazardous Materials Operations including management of student employees and supporting sister departments. The position also supports sustainability initiatives and recycling programs. Must actively participate as an incident responder for hazardous materials, bodily fluid and environmental releases.  Serves as lead in absence of Hazardous Materials Manager.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s degree required with 5+ years of related experience

**Will consider candidate with successful completion of National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS), certification and significant experience (7-10 years directly related experience).

  • Knowledge of RCRA hazardous waste management and Code of Massachusetts Regulation CMR 310.30,
  • Ability to manage people and projects in an effective manor
  • Knowledge in lead and asbestos abatement projects
  • Must obtain Certificate of completion for “40 hour Hazardous Waste site worker safety course”, required at regulated superfund and Brownfield sites within 6 months of hire
  • Must have or obtain RCRA/DOT and IATA training within 6 months of hire

Additional Considerations:

  • Hazardous Materials Manager Certification
  • Knowledge in lead and asbestos abatement projects.
  • Self starter and goal orientated
  • Able to work harmoniously with Administration, Faculty, Staff and Students

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Prefer Bachelor’s degree in Environmental, Science or Engineering
