General Summary of Position:

The Radiation Safety Specialist (RSS) assures the operation and implementation of the university radiation safety program.  In addition, assists the Director of Radiation Safety (DRS) in administration of three UMass Lowell radioactive materials licenses, trains radiation workers and University personnel, and assist in the campus Non-ionizing radiation safety program.

The RSS understands and supports the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) mission and vision and contributes to a successful team oriented work environment ensuring interdependence and cooperation, constructive and positive communications, and mutual support.  Promotes and exemplifies campus divisional and departmental high standards for excellent client service, effective use of resources, workplace safety, professional development, personal accountability, and continuous improvement.

This position is located in Andover, Massachusetts. 

Minimum Qualifications (Required):


  • Bachelor’s Degree in the radiological sciences or related field
  • The ability to work effectively with diverse groups


  • 5-7 years working with radioactive materials or radiation emitting devices


  • Knowledge and ability sufficient to ensure proper radiation safety survey techniques, calibration of radiological instruments, radiation source inventory and waste storage procedures in addition to being able to prepare and analyze environmental samples and maintain the campus dosimetry program
  • Must be able to complete 40 hour HAZWOPER training and have Availability and ability to remain on call 24/7 in cases of emergency
  • Must be able to wear air purifying respirator or SCBA
  • Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a willingness to drive between campuses and to off campus assignments

Additional Considerations:

  • MS Degree in health physics, radiological sciences, or related field is a plus
  • Certification in health physics is a plus
  • Knowledge and experience in Animal vivarium radiation safety
  • Knowledge and experience working with PET imaging isotopes
  • Knowledge and ability sufficient to perform compliance and oversight of facilities that include a nuclear reactor, accelerator, gamma irradiators, and lasers is a plus.
  • Experience working in a Vivarium and/or with Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)
  • Experience PET scanning and/or imaging equipment
  • Understanding of CMR 310 (Hazardous waste Regs)
  • Understanding of Laboratory best practices NFPA 45 and 30
  • Understanding of OSHA programs related to laboratory safety
