General Summary of Position:

The Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a talented Systems Administrator to maintain its enterprise server systems and storage, desktop workstations, and network infrastructure for its 25 employees. STL is a vibrant, forward-looking laboratory that runs a nationally recognized radar-modeling program supporting signature collection efforts for US Army, Air Force, Navy, and FFRDC sponsors.

The Systems Administrator position will draw on a wide range of skills from basic computer and network troubleshooting to enterprise systems administration of STL’s 500 terabyte internet isolated data center and workstations. STL operates 30 servers, three networks, and 60 workstations, running Windows, MacOS, and Linux operating systems. Technologies include VMware, Windows Servers (AD, GP, WSUS, DNS, DHCP), Veeam, Synology, RackTop, Cisco, 10GbE networking, and air-gapped networks. Updates to workstations, client and server applications, and structured network configuration are a regular occurrence to ensure DoD compliance (FIPS, DFARS, NISPOM, CMMC) of our networks and systems. 

The ideal candidate will have prior experience with Windows servers, VMware vSphere and ESXi virtualization, enterprise class hardware, and the unique challenges of top-to-bottom systems administration. The individual will assist senior staff in maintaining strong cybersecurity posture for our DoD compliant infrastructure, so experience with CIS, SANS, or NIST cybersecurity practices is a plus. Experience with maintaining isolated corporate intranets and 802.1Q VLANs is desired. A strong desire to learn and implement new but proven technologies is a must. 

General responsibilities include:

  • End-to-end systems administration of internet isolated (internet dark) site
  • VMware vSphere 7.0 administration
  • Microsoft Windows Server 2012 through 2019 administration
  • Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DCHP administration
  • Multi-tier enterprise storage hardware and disaster prevention planning
  • Windows 7 and 10 workstation administration and maintenance
  • General client/server application installation and maintenance
  • Systems troubleshooting and hardware maintenance
  • Computer inventory and specifications tracking
  • Serve as STL liaison to UMass Lowell Central IT
  • Implementation of dynamic cybersecurity requirements
  • Basic MacOS and Linux support

 Minimum Qualifications (Required):


  • BA or BS in Information Technology (IT) or 4+ years IT experience


  • 2+ years of experience with VMware and Windows Server 2012-2019, Windows 10 client administration and some MacOS.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Enterprise level server administration for high availability, mission-critical data storage and disaster prevention/recovery.
  • Experience with Windows Server technologies (Active Directory, Group Policy, DNS, DHCP, WSUS) as well as iSCSI, Veeam, RackTop, Cisco, and air-gapped and internet isolated intranet operation. 
  • Enterprise class storage hardware and technologies experience
  • Software and hardware firewalls experience.
  • Strong problem solving and troubleshooting skills
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills
  • Must be self-motivated and able to work independently

Additional Considerations:

  • The ideal candidate will have the ability to work independently as well as with a technically diverse engineering team
  • The ideal candidate will also be highly motivated and have solid interpersonal and deadline management skills
  • The individual must be comfortable with occasional work on ladders and overnight travel within the U.S. approximately one week per year
  • The position requires 95% on-premise (on-site), in-person work at STL, with very limited remote work-from-home
  • The selected candidate will be required to obtain a Department of Defense Secret level Security Clearance within 3 months of hire and maintain the clearance for the length of employment. Security Clearance application process is initiated by STL upon initial hire
