General Summary of Position:

This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.

The Controller’s Office is responsible for financial management and reporting, maintaining a control environment for the proper use of funds and compliance in accordance with Federal, State, and University policy and procedure.  The Office establishes business practices and procedures, prepares campus financial statements and liaisons with internal and external auditors.  The Office has frequent interface with the President’s Office Central Services including University Controller, UPST, Budget, Tax and Treasury in coordinating financial activities of the campus with overall University goals and objectives. The Controller’s Office further manages the development, maintenance, and integration of the university financial ERP system with accounting operations and actively analyzes financial information utilizing queries, spreadsheets, databases, and other reporting tools for trend analyses, forecasts, and financial ratios. The Controller’s Office also provides guidance and support to campus administrative business units and campus organizations for the effective operation of all campus financial activity. The Assistant Controller provides functional support to the Controller, responsible for effective financial reporting and accounting according to GAAP and GASB.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, or related field with accounting concentration
  • Seven to 10 years’ experience relating to managerial and financial accounting, budgeting and reporting including maintenance, analysis, and reporting in higher education or sectors servicing higher education and non-profits e.g., public accounting
  • Solid understanding of accounting promulgations particularly GAAP, GASBs and SAS
  • Experience with ERP systems (preferably PeopleSoft) and developing business processes and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office
  • Excellent critical thinking and analytical skills to develop, maintain, and communicate accurate financial information and necessary systems and procedures to support internal control and compliance requirements
  •  A high level of professionalism and integrity with a demonstrated ability to work productively and influence all  levels  of  an  organization,  the  ability  to  maintain  focus, successfully execute plans, and bring closure to activities, tasks, and projects
  • Strong personal  attributes  including ethics, integrity, patience, flexibility, adaptability, persistence, and tact
  • Highly organized and detail oriented
  • Excellent oral and in written communication skills including experience making presentations

Additional Considerations:

  • A master's degree in business administration or related field
  • Advanced certifications e.g., CPA, CMA
  • Excellent organization skills, with attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and strategic-thinking ability
  • Ability to work as a team player and build strong interpersonal relationships with all levels of the organization
  • Experience developing staff professional development programs, training materials for clients etc.
  • Experience in public and/or private higher education financial operations
  • PeopleSoft experience
