General Summary of Position:

The Nurse Practitioner provides accessible, evidence based, confidential, high quality health care to students at the University of Massachusetts Lowell facilitating their personal and academic success.

Direct Clinical:

  • Provide direct patient care to students
    • Collect and evaluate subjective and objective data from history taking, physical exam and diagnostic testing which may include specimen collection including venipuncture, point of care testing, and some microscopy
    • Formulate an assessment; develop and implement a plan of care
    • Document visits in electronic medical record
    • Provide health education, prevention, crisis intervention and patient advocacy
    • Refer patients to appropriate healthcare providers as needed
    • Identify, treat and/or refer acute care emergencies

Supportive Clinical:

  • Coordinate care for students by arranging procedures/testing in the community; including the scheduling of appointments with specialists and in follow up
  • Provide written or verbal communication with faculty, athletic coaches, trainers, healthcare providers, DPH and parents as  needed
  • Process prescription requests by phone/fax/mail order
  • Process prior authorization requests for prescriptions as well as testing as required by insurance
  • Complete DPH paperwork as required and discuss/consult/refer to local BOH per reportable guidelines

 Administrative:

  •  Engages in professional development relevant to adolescent and adult healthcare
  • Attend professional development meetings/conferences as required for licensure and certification.
  • Participate in and complete risk management and other mandated trainings as required by the University/Division of Student Affairs
  • Interact/interface with quest Diagnostics/Medicat and UML IT as needed
  • Attend monthly Division of Student Affairs meetings and participate in other Student Affairs offerings as schedules allow

Collaborative:

  • Collaborate with Counseling Services and Disability Services regarding shared clients
  • Consult with Supervising Physician regarding patient issues and plan of care as needed
  • Connect students to various on campus supportive services (Centers for Learning, Office of Multicultural Affairs, International Students and Scholars Office, etc.)
  • Support Health Education programming for students

Precept Students:

  • Provide guidance, mentoring and evaluation of nurse practitioner students or other students in the Zuckerberg College of Health Sciences as appropriate
  • Facilitate clinical experiences with quality patient care and safety

Quality Assurance:

  • Develop topics for QA studies
  • Periodic review of patient charts for quality measurements
  • Collaborate with Nurse Practitioners and consulting physician in developing and maintaining protocols and guidelines for practice

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Adult or Family Nurse Practitioner with a minimum of a Master’s Degree required

Certification/Licensure:

  • Current certification by a nationally recognized credentialing agency
  • Current RN/CNP registration with the Massachusetts Board of Nursing
  • Current Massachusetts Controlled Substance Registration and DEA Registration

Experience:

  • Minimum 1 year, 3-5 years preferred, as a Nurse Practitioner in Internal Medicine, Primary Care or Urgent Care
  • College Health experience preferred

Skills:

  • Excellent clinical knowledge and judgement
  • Ability to function independently, strategically plan and handle multiple tasks and responsibilities simultaneously
  • Demonstrated skill and proficiency in performing health care assessments and developing appropriate treatment plans
  • Experience with electronic health records
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work and communicate with a diverse population and with other health care professionals

This is a SEIU 888 Professional Union position, Grade P19.
