General Summary of Position:

The Head Rowing Coach oversees all UMass Lowell Club Rowing activities as well as coaches the men’s program.

  • Foster a supportive environment that develops student leaders
  • Supervise/Coach UMass Lowell Men’s and Women’s Club Rowing
  • Recruit, hire, train, supervise, and evaluate a minimum of 3 part-time assistant rowing coaches
  • Responsible for working with club members to raise enough funds to operate the club through operating funds, fund raising and team dues.
  • Oversee daily practices, race weekends, team schedule and work collaboratively with the rowing captains to develop direction of the team.
  • Responsible for on and off campus recruiting.
  • Implement effective short term and long term equipment planning
  • Maintain all rowing shells in safe working order.
  • Work with Campus Rec staff to maintain rowing club website
  • Responsible for managing the rowing equipment at the Bellegarde Boathouse, including but not limited to: purchasing suggestions, daily cleanliness schedules and inspections, routine maintenance, interactions with boathouse equipment vendors.
  • Ability to drive a coaching launch.
  • Ability to drive a rowing shell trailer.
  • Insure all programs are operating in a safe manner and in compliance with the UMass Lowell Bellegarde Boathouse Safety Manual, State and Federal Law, and nationally recognized water sports organizations.
  • Coordinate the seasonal installation and removal of docks.
  • Monitor water levels and weather to protect UMass Lowell equipment in the case of inclement weather.
  • This position requires frequent physical exertion and the ability to demonstrate rowing technique.
  • Requires the ability to carry rowing shells and lift up to 100 lbs.
  • Position requires the ability to view a computer screen on a daily basis.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):


  • Bachelor’s degree


  • 3-5 years rowing coaching experience
  • Previous experience implementing water safety procedures
  • Experience managing small regattas
  • Previous experience working with college aged students
  • Experience with minor boat repairs


  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to relate effectively with youth, college students and adults
  • Ability to drive a truck towing a large trailer
  • Excellent organizational, computer, and administrative skills
  • USRowing Coaching Certification
