Postdoctoral Research Associate - Materials and Structures in Extreme Conditions

General Summary of Position:

The successful candidate will conduct experimental and numerical research on mechanics of polymers, polymeric composites, and/or mechanical metamaterials under high strain rate and impact loading, as well as varied temperature and pressure conditions, and will work with the PI in writing scholarly articles, making conference presentations, and providing reporting and presentations to sponsors as well as developing new research directions and writing new proposals.

Essential Job Duties:

  1. Conduct experimental and numerical research on mechanics of materials and metamaterials in extreme loading and impact under the supervision of the Principal Investigator (PI). Specifically, it includes:
    • Formulating the computational models
    • Designing, developing, and validating experimental procedures.
    • Performing, evaluating and analyzing results, and deriving an understanding of underlying phenomena.
    • Prepare status reports and deliverables in collaboration with and under the direction of the PI, on time and to the highest standard.
  2. Assist the supervisor in writing scholarly articles and research proposals
    • The successful candidate will be expected to assist in the preparation of graphics and text for articles and proposals (including data interpretation and analysis, plotting, graphical design). The successful candidate will be expected to initiate and assist in the formulation and writing of externally funded research proposals. This effort will include finding appropriate opportunities, finding collaborative partners, generating preliminary data, and proposal writing. 
    • The successful candidate will be expected to publish at least 2 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals as the primary contributor, and more as secondary contributor, as well as preparing abstract, conference proceedings, and slide decks for presentation in conferences.
  3. Supervise graduate students
    • Conduct weekly group meeting between PI, Post-Docs, and students.
    • Interact and advise graduate students on research, reporting, and presentation
  4. Promote the University’s commitment to customer service by:

    • Ensuring optimum service to all internal and external partners in response to all requests for service and information.
    • Maintaining an environment that is welcoming to persons of all backgrounds, nationalities, and roles.
  5. Attend Meetings related to the research projects
    • Conduct weekly group meeting between PI, Post-Docs, and students.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:

  • Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering or related area

Experience:

  • Physical, mathematical, and computational model formulation
  • Mechanical testing of materials, high rate testing and measurement, MATLAB, Fortran, Python, LS-Dyna and other FEM package, such as COMSOL.
  • Experience in high performance computing software development and computational simulation will also be valued

Skills:

  • Computer programming
  • Experimental mechanics, scientific and interpersonal communication (individual and group meetings, presentations, written reports, journal publications, etc.)

Additional Considerations:

  • Should demonstrate a minimum number of at least 2 publications in the field
  • Ability to work independently, with limited direction, as well as within a team environment
  • Ability to mentor and inspire students with limited research experience

This position is contingent upon funding. The initial appointment will be for up to one year with a possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding.
