General Summary of Position:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate will work closely with faculty, graduate students and undergraduate students to carry out research for ARO Flame retardant project on the development of durable flame retardant coatings through surface treatment by chemical or plasma-activated functionalization under the direction of the Principal Investigator.  This position is contingent upon funding.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Conduct studies in chemical and plasma-assisted functionalization of Nyco (1:1, nylon : cotton) and nylon fabrics’ surface for flame retardant clothing applications.  Analyze and document results, and use the results to plan future studies.
  • Develop crosslinking methods between surface functional groups of Nyco and physically adsorbed tannic acid and phytic acid via thermal curing methods
  • Manage the lab by maintaining instruments, such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and microscale calorimetry, and ordering required chemicals and lab supplies for the projects in addition to supervising the graduate and undergraduate students working on the projects in conjunction with the PI.
  • Review appropriate literature pertaining to current or proposed research. Prepare materials for publication and grant proposals as well as advise and train graduate students in this regard.
  • Maintain written records of research progress and process of research performed.
  • Prepare quarterly progress reports. Present findings at meetings when necessary.

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

Education:  Must have a Ph.D. in Plastics/Chemical Engineering/Chemistry/Material Science or related field.

Additional Considerations:

Prior grant writing experience desirable; Experience in development of flame retardant (FR) materials and coatings, including working knowledge of chemical modification and functionalization of bio-based materials as FR for Nyco, nylon, or cotton fabric in addition to extensive FR chemistry experience.

This position is contingent upon funding.  The initial appointment will be for ONE year with a possibility of renewal based on productivity and performance and the availability of funding.
