SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION: The Undergraduate Academic Advisor supports ongoing retention and student success initiatives and activities at the University in order to increase undergraduate student retention and student success. The goal of the Academic Advisor is to increase the number of diverse nursing students persisting in and graduating from the CNHS” The Undergraduate Academic Advisor adheres to campus-wide advising standards, policies, procedures, and practices at UMass Dartmouth. Assists with the ongoing assessment and improvement of academic advising. The advisor provides students with information and advice concerning program requirements. Supports students using appropriate technology and other best practices.  Builds partnerships with CNHS faculty and collaborates with faculty and staff to provide effective integrated advising and retention activities. Communicates with respective college administrators, chairs, and faculty regarding retention issues. Represents the College at various admissions, retention, and other student events. The position advises students on the development of their educational plan and makes appropriate referrals to assist students in the selection of their major and evaluation of their educational progress. Follows protocols for students placed on academic warning and probation and works to develop and implement retention plans with students. Advises students wishing to withdraw from or take a leave of absence from the University.  May serve on planning committees for advising and registration, and retention initiatives. The incumbent collaborates with other departments in the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs divisions such as Registrar’s Office, Financial Aid, and Career Center, among others.

Follows the University’s best practices to build and support student academic success and retention, and assists in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all students.

EXAMPLES OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assists with the development and implementation of retention plans for students who are on Academic Warning, Academic Probation and Subject to Dismissal and potential impact to financial aid.
  • Provides advising, retention, and success initiatives to a cohort of undergraduate students, including high-priority first-year nursing and MLS students.
  • Communicates and meets regularly with advisees.
  • Demonstrates cultural competencies and behaviors in all interactions.
  • Proactively tracks students identified as 'at risk' and provides additional support; monitors academic outcomes.
  • Develops persistence and retention plans for pre-matriculated and first-year high-priority students focused on achieving successful transitions into and through the first year of the nursing program.
  • Explains program requirements to enrolled and potential students and provides information about appropriate resources and opportunities.
  • Provides general reports and summary analysis of collected student data to deans and supervisors.
  • Develops advising and academic mapping materials and workshops and participates as appropriate.
  • Consults on issues pertaining to transfer course equivalencies for current and potential students.
  • Develops and updates students’ academic plan(s) as necessary and/or revises or refers students’ plan of work for new credit to other University programs.
  • Collaborates with faculty and staff at the College, and the Academic and Student Affairs Divisions, to enhance student success.
  • Communicates with Deans, Chairs, and faculty on general and specific advising issues.
  • Assists with the development and implementation of retention plans for students who are on Academic Warning, Academic Probation and Subject to Dismissal and potential impact to financial aid.
  • Works on developing and revising online advising resources.
  • Participates in College and University committees such as those devoted to enrollment management, retention, and academic advising, among others.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree
  • EXPERIENCE: Previous (one or more years) experience advising undergraduate students. Experience working with BIPOC, first-gen, and/or low-income students.
  • OTHER: Available for evening/weekend hours as needed. Some travel may be required.   

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Demonstrated academic advising experience; experience with student information systems and reporting systems.
  • Experience working in Healthcare

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Be knowledgeable of the undergraduate programs
  • Able to coach students in severe academic difficult
  • Strong knowledge of the University’s academic policies and procedures as well as eligibility requirements
  • Strong organizational, leadership, and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated ability and commitment to working with students from underserved populations
  • Able to relate to students, faculty, and University personnel
  • Able to report and interpret data
  • Strong communication skills
  • Understanding of the barriers faced by BIPOC, first-gen, and/or low-income students”
  • Knowledge of strategies that support the academic outcomes of BIPOC, first-gen, and/or low-income students”
  • Demonstrated track record of increasing persistence and retention among BIPOC, first-gen, and/or low-income students
  • Ability to adapt and work collaboratively to achieve program outcomes

SALARY: $53,900.00-72,000.00
