POSITION TITLE: Steam Fireman I

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Fires and maintains the operation of high-pressure steam boilers in a Power Plant, assists in making repairs to operation parts, maintains Power Plant in a clean orderly condition and performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED:  Works under the direct supervision of 3rd class Power Plant Engineer, 2nd class Power Plant Engineer and Chief Power Plant Engineer who review work performance through inspections for conformance with instructions and compliance with departmental standards.

DIRECT REPORTING STAFF: May exercise functional supervision over some or all the activities of Power Plant attendants and other employees assigned to Power Plant operations.

DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Operates a high-pressure boiler fired by either fuel oil or natural gas, under the direction of a Plant Engineer
  • Builds and maintains fires in a boiler at proper heat intensity
  • Operates and maintains feed and vacuum pumps and other boiler room apparatus
  • Cleans and scrapes boiler tubes and boiler plates found in a high-pressure boiler
  • Assists in making repairs to a high-pressure boiler and in making repairs to equipment found in boiler rooms and mechanical rooms such as fuel oil, chemical and water pumps, fuel oil heaters, water softeners, oil burners, blowers, flow meters, steam traps, compressors, steam operated water heaters and similar mechanical equipment
  • Maintains equipment in a Power Plant for preservation and appearance by cleaning, painting, and greasing same
  • Takes readings and records such Power Plant data as gauge readings, fuel consumption, steam generated, and other similar data
  • Maintains Power Plant in a clean orderly condition by sweeping, washing, polishing, belting, greasing equipment, and attendant area
  • May be required to perform similar duties in other mechanical rooms of the institution as required

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED AT HIRE:

  •  Knowledge of the types and uses of low and/or high-pressure boilers
  • Knowledge of the methods, techniques of operation of steam boilers and auxiliary equipment
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices and techniques used in firing and operating low-pressure and high-pressure boilers and their auxiliary equipment
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of electrical, mechanical, and pneumatic controls used in power plant operations
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of precision measuring equipment used in power plant such as manometers, voltmeters, anemometers, tachometers, etc.
  • Knowledge of calibration and/or adjustment techniques as applied to control systems used in power plant operations
  • Knowledge of the safety procedures followed in power plant operations
  • Knowledge of proper methods of storage and handling fuel
  • Skill in using small hand tools such as wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, hacksaws, pipe threaders, etc.
  • Ability to understand and apply the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, etc. governing assigned unit activities
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as plans, specifications, drawings, technical manuals, etc.
  • Ability to use precision measuring equipment, devices and instrumentation
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions
  • Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language
  • Ability to maintain accurate records
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
  • Ability to visually distinguish colors
  • Ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing production requirements
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of industrial type ventilation systems
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of industrial type air conditioning systems

QUALIFICATIONS ACQUIRED ON JOB:

  • Knowledge of the policies, procedures, specifications, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities
  • Knowledge of the types and uses of agency forms

 MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a current and valid Second-Class Steam Fireman’s license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety, pursuant to Chapter 146 of the Massachusetts General Laws
  • Ability to obtain Third-Class Power Plant Engineer’s license within 24 months of start date

LICENSE AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Possession of a current and valid Second-Class Steam Fireman’s license issued by the Massachusetts Department of Public Safety
  • Ability to obtain Third-Class Power Plant Engineer’s license within 24 months of start date

REMARKS:  Steam Firemen work under exposure to the hazards of the harmful effects of gases, noxious fumes, chemicals, noise, heat, inadequate ventilation, machinery in motion, etc.; work varied shifts, weekends, nights and holidays; work subject to a standby (24 hour) work status; lift and carry heavy objects; work at heights of up to 100 ft. and may work in correctional institutions.
