SUMMARY PURPOSE OF POSITION:
The EH&S Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the safe handling, storage of hazardous substances on campus. This position understands and supports the Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) mission and vision. Contribute to a successful team-oriented work environment ensuring collaboration and cooperation, divisional and departmental high standard for excellent client service, stewardship of state resources, workplace safety, professional development, accountability, training, and compliance. This position implements best practices to maintain compliance with applicable regulations and standards. Identify deficiencies and implement corrective actions. Assists the University in effecting compliance with various Federal, State and Local regulatory and non-regulatory requirements pertaining to public safety, education, and the environment not limited to; OSHA, NIOSH, NIH, NFPA, CMRs, DEP, EPA, RCRA, and DOT. Responsible for the management and oversight of the campus chemical inventory (CEMS system) ensuring that the campus remains in compliance with fire, building and safety codes. Follow the University’s best practices to build and/or support student academic success and retention, and assist in meeting strategic objectives for persistence and timely graduation of all the student population.
EXAMPLE OF PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Responsible for managing the CEMS inventory database.
- Supports and assist campus to maintain compliance with applicable fire, building, and safety codes.
- Oversees & manage waste disposal (biological, hazardous, chemical, and general).
- Responsible for the approval and tracking of chemical and gas requisitions.
- Provides faculty and students with various safety related training and guidance.
- Conducts a wide range of safety inspections and laboratory/studio audits.
- Conducts annual certification of chemical fume hoods and biosafety cabinets.
- Conducts annual testing of emergency eye wash and safety showers.
- Assist in the development of safety procedures for the campus for a wide variety of campus health and safety services. Identifies issues and implements corrective actions.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, local and University safety and hazardous material regulations.
- Assists with implementation of safety policies and procedures, including training of campus personnel.
- Responds to campus hazardous materials emergencies and other reports of unsafe conditions.
- Serves as a member of the University Chemical and Rad/Laser Safety Committee.
- Assists principal investigators in the development of standard operating procedures and/or best practices to be used with routine processes and experiments in the laboratory/studio, including but not limited to: hazards associated with chemicals used in labs based on SDS’s and other references sources, proper laboratory engineering controls, administrative procedures and personal protective equipment.
- Manages compliance requirements related to hazardous waste management, OSHA Hazard Communication, Chemical Hygiene Plan and other safety equipment such as but not limited to fire extinguishers, emergency eye wash and safety showers and fume hoods.
- Provides safety and regulatory information and assistance to management, faculty, staff and students on laboratory safety procedures related to hazardous materials, safe use and practices.
- Liaises with faculty PI’s, staff, facilities department, students, and outside agencies related to EH &S, emergency management and continuity management.

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in science, emergency management or related field.
EXPERIENCE: Minimum of 1 year of experience in emergency management and/or continuity management.
OTHER: Must have a valid Driver’s License and be willing to drive between campuses locations and to off campus assignments. Must be able to report to campus when required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- An understanding of regulation standards and best practices from, but not limited to; NFPA, NIOSH, OSHA, MassDEP, EPA, FEMA, CDC
- 40-hour HAZWOPER Training certified
- Understanding of ANSI Standard Z136.3 – 2005
- Must have RCRA/DOT/IATA training
- Understanding of Code of Mass Regulation (CMR) 310 (Haz-Waste Rules), OSHA 29 CFR1910.1200 and 1910.1450
- Ability to provide a high standard of customer service to all faculty, staff and students at the University
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Motivated self-starter requiring minimum supervision
- Ability to work in all areas of the University including laboratory environments
- Ability to work in environments involves exposure to potentially dangerous materials and situations that require following detailed safety precautions and may include the use of protective gear
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management
- Ability to lift up to fifty pounds
- Ability to handle working with hazardous chemicals
- Computer skills to update online training and website as needed
- Master’s degree in science, environmental health and safety, or related field
- Experience in higher education and research laboratory use
- CSP: Certified Safety Specialist
- CHMM: Certified Hazardous Materials Manager
- Knowledge in lab safety audits
- Working knowledge in OSHA
This position may have the possibility for remote work (one day per week).
