General Summary of Position:

This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position.

The Assistant Dean for the College of Fine Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences, provides strategic leadership in the areas of curriculum management, recruitment, advising, retention, and academic success of undergraduate students within the College.

The Assistant Dean communicates regularly with college departments, members of Deans' Council, Student Affairs (including Residence Life and Disability Services, Human Resources and EOO, University Relations, and Advancement.  External communications include college alumni and potential donors.

Essential Job Duties:

• Processing adjunct contracts and projecting/reporting funding
• First Year Seminar oversight (instructors, scheduling, coordination between departments and registrar)
• Supervision of Undeclared Liberal Arts (ULA) student advising and issues (since there is no “department chair” for these students)
• Advising for a sub-set of ULA students (non-first year) and SAP appeals for ULAs
• Collaborate with the College-Based Advising team regarding FAHSS-wide advising plans.
• Appeals of Academic Suspension hearings for FAHSS students
• Appeals of Academic Dishonesty (Plagiarism) cases for FAHSS (for plagiarism that happens in FAHSS *courses*)
• Change of grade forms for all FAHSS courses
• Transfer Course equivalencies for FAHS-prefixed courses (first year seminars, interdisciplinary courses)
• Participation in Admissions events (Open House, Welcome Day) for prospective new students
• Participation in New Student and Transfer Orientation (January and summer)
• Represent FAHSS Dean’s office at on- and off-campus events
 •Dean-level appeals of final grades in all FAHSS courses
• All exception forms that require FAHSS Dean’s signature (mostly World Languages requirement, some other college-level requirements)
• All petition forms that require FAHSS Dean’s signature (over credit limit, late transfer credits, other unique student issues)
• All change of major forms that require FAHSS Dean’s signature (changing from one college to another)
• Coordination with departments and registrar’s office regarding Advising Reports (ARs)
• Assistant Dean will work collaboratively with Associate Dean on enrollment management issues in the college (course caps, schedule, adjunct class limits, etc.)
• Coordination (not management) of Experiential Learning Activities within FAHSS (Model UN, Emerging Scholars, Mock Trial, CTSS Internships, CPO interns, Washington Center internships, etc.)
• Coordination of Alumni Advisory Board activities
• Creative Ventures/Difference Makers
• Oversight/Supervision of the FAHSS Advising Center
•Serve on university committees as needed
•Other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications (Required):

  • Ph.D. or discipline appropriate terminal degree
  • Tenured faculty member or Associate or Full Teaching Professor; Department or College administrative experience.
  • Strong communication skills, high level of organization, ability to exercise discretion and confidentiality, problem solving skills, ability to work with diverse groups.
