General Summary of Position:

Incumbents of positions in this series operate boilers and related equipment; read meters and gauges at specified intervals; open and close valves and adjust controls; check/monitor operating systems to detect faulty operating equipment.

This position operates boilers and related equipment clean, maintain and/or lubricate power plant and related auxiliary equipment.

Record data and maintain logs on such matters as temperatures, fuel consumption, steam usage including State mandated operators log books. Performs minor repairs and/or adjust power plant and related auxiliary equipment using hand tools in order to ensure proper and safe operation.

Performs related duties such as maintaining cleanliness and appearance of work areas.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Valid Massachusetts 2nd Class Steam Fireman (for Steam Fireman I)  or 1st Class Steam Fireman license (for Steam Fireman II)

Special Instructions to Applicants:

Position has multiple shifts.  Current anticipated shifts are as follows:

Friday through Tuesday, First shift, 6 AM to 2 PM, 

Sunday, 6 AM – 2 PM, Monday, 2 PM – 10 PM, Tuesday, 2 PM – 10 PM, Wednesday, 10 PM – 6 AM Thursday, 10 PM – 6 AM

 Only Internal (MTA - Maintenance & Trades Bargaining Union) candidates will be considered during the first 10 business days of the posting. All other candidates will be considered after that period.
