General Summary of Position:

This being an internal opportunity, only current UML Employees, irrespective of Bargaining units are eligible to apply for this position. 

The Submillimeter-Wave Technology Laboratory (STL) at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a Radio Frequency (RF) hardware technician with high frequency electronics and computer interfacing skills.

STL is a nationally recognized Laboratory with federally sponsored activity in the areas of millimeter-wave and submillimeter-wave radar transceiver development, radar signature collection, materials characterization, and signal & image processing.

A key responsibility of this position will be to serve as a supporting member of a forward-looking engineering team responsible for securing external funding in areas such as remote sensing, image/signal processing, and space geodesy.

The RF hardware technician will interface radar transceivers and related subsystems with computer control systems using LabVIEW. Experience with RF measurement techniques, frequency synthesizers, and FPGA programming is desirable. Experience with maintaining multi-core data processing clusters is also desirable.

With support of senior staff, the candidate should also have the ability to create rudimentary layouts of analog/digital printed circuit boards (PCBs) using discrete components and perform initial circuit modeling analysis of the PCBs using tools such as MultiSim or SPICE.

This position is grant funded.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field
  • Demonstrated experience with programming microwave frequency synthesizers, FPGAs, and other RF electronic devices
  • Demonstrated programming skills in languages such as LabVIEW, C, and hardware description languages such as VHDL, is required
  • Applicants must be prepared to discuss prior experience/familiarity with skills related to RF systems, digital electronics, and computer interfacing. Some experience with signal generators and FPGA programming using VHDL or LabVIEW is required
  • U.S. citizenship is required
  • Individuals must obtain a US government security clearance within 3 months from the date of hire and retain the clearance while employed at STL.

Additional Considerations:

  • Additional experience soldering and un-soldering discrete components to PCBs, including working and reworking small surface mount devices (i.e chip inductors, resistors), is desirable
  • Familiarity with the families of National Instruments Inc. signal conditioning, data acquisition, and motion control modules is beneficial
  • The applicant should also possess good oral/written communication, interpersonal, and deadline management skills
  • The successful applicant will be capable of working with diverse groups and productively/professionally collaborating with staff engineers, scientists, undergraduate/graduate students, as well as government sponsors
