General Summary of Summary:

The Center for Advanced Materials at the University of Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to assist in studies related to development of durable flame retardant coatings through surface treatment, chemical functionalization and UV-curing under the direction of the Project Investigators.

The principal role of the Postdoctoral Research Associate is to work on the project alongside the principal investigators. More specifically, the Postdoctoral Research Associate will a) perform major research activities of the research project, b) prepare technical reports, conference presentations and manuscripts for publication based on the results of research activities, and c) develop and write future research proposals.

Conduct studies in chemical and microwave assisted functionalization of Nyco (1:1, nylon : cotton) and cotton fabrics’ surface for flame retardant clothing applications.  Analyze and document results, and use the results to plan future stud

Develop crosslinking methods between newly introduced surface functional groups and physically adsorbed phosphonic and sulfonic acid monomers via thermal and UV-Vis-curing methods in addition to developing novel optical and electronic materials.

Manage the lab by maintaining instruments, such as UV-Vis, fluorometer, and spin coater and also ordering required chemicals and lab supplies for the projects in addition to supervising the graduate and undergraduate students working on the projects in conjunction with the PI.

Review appropriate literature pertaining to current or proposed research.  Prepare materials for publication and grant proposals as well as advise and train graduate students in this regard.

Maintain written records of research progress and process of research performed.

Prepare quarterly progress reports.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have PH.D. in Chemistry/Material Science or related field
