General Summary of Position:

The Center for Advanced Materials at University Massachusetts Lowell is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to assist in studies related to developing high performance polymeric films or coatings for oxygen and water vapor permeation. The Candidate is expected to have experience with the synthesis and characterization of organic compounds and polymeric materials with techniques such as anionic, cationic, or RAFT polymerization, as well as with graphene chemistry. The evaluation of moisture and oxygen barrier material is desirable but not essential. The principal role of the Post-Doctoral Research Associate is to work on the project alongside the principal investigators. More specifically, the Post-Doctoral Research Associate will a) perform major research activities of the research project, b) prepare technical reports, conference presentations and manuscripts for publication based on the results of research activities, and c) develop and write future research proposals.

The principle role of the Post-Doctoral Research Associate is to work on the project alongside the principal investigator.  A critical feature of the role of the position will also be able to a) design, synthesis and characterization of polymeric coatings ( may contain Graphene ) for flexible barrier materials; b) Evaluation barrier materials; c) Preparation of technical reports, manuscripts for publications, presentations for technical conferences, mentor students and proposals; d)The Post-Doctoral Research Associate will be expected to perform other activities related to the development of the program in future and collaborative research projects such as help develop proposals in related fields and mentor students.

This position is contingent upon funding.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemistry, Materials Science, or Chemical Engineering
  • Synthesis and characterization of polymeric materials and coatings and experience with carbon chemistry relevant to barrier materials
  •  Knowledge and familiarity with the fabrication and characterization of materials and films and evaluation of their barrier properties
  • Experience with a number of spectroscopic techniques (GPC, FTIR, NMR, UV-Vis, TGA, and Raman) as well as optical and electronic instrumentation and microscopy techniques
